For the specification of new buildings there is a wide range of insulation materials and techniques to choose from. This paper indicates the breadth of the range and gives guidance both on the selection of the materials and on their performance.

The original Partnership of Hutchison Locke and Monk is arguably a large one, employing about one hundred administrative and technical staff, with seven partners and twelve associates. It is based in offices in Richmond-upon-Thames, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Sheffield and Dublin, and as from 1st. January 1988 it changed in status to a Company with the title HLM Architects Ltd.

Heating of office buildings presents special problems for the Heating Engineer because, whilst they are generally intermittently heated, some areas may require to be heated at additional times. High insulation levels applied to the building fabric will save energy but may not be as cost-effective as other conservation measures. It is important with office buildings to consider not only insulation levels but also plant application and performance.

Denmark has a long history of academic achievement in the field of high insulation, starting with the work of Professor Dr Techn Poul Becher some 40 years ago. This work is reviewed and is followed by a series of extracts from the Danish Building Code. Some direct comparisons are made between Danish and United Kingdom energy costs and degree days. The paper concludes with a brief comment on the difference in approach to Building Codes and Regulations in the two countries.
