The compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) is not a specific collector, but a family of collectors based on a general design principle for maximizing the geometric concentration, C, for radiation within a given acceptance half angle ±θc. This maximum limit exceeds by a factor of 2 to 4 that attainable by systems using focusing optics. The wide acceptance angles permitted using these techniques have several unique advantages for solar concentrators including the elimination of the diurnal tracking requirement at intermediate concentrations (up to ~10x), collection of circumsolar and some diffuse radiation and relaxed tolerances. Because of these advantages, CPC type concentrators have applications in solar energy wherever concentration is desired, e.g., for a wide variety of both thermal and photovoltaic uses. The basic principles of nonimaging optical design are reviewed. Selected configurations for both non-evacuated and evacuated thermal collector applications are discussed with particular emphasis on the most recent advances. The use of CPC type elements as secondary concentrators is illustrated in the context of higher concentration photovoltaic applications.

摘要:
Performance of solar ponds in cold climates can be significantly improved with heat pumps and district heating. A detailed computer performance study is presented of a 1260 m2pond with a heat pump used for the heating of a 25-house community. The costs and load profiles of these systems are also briefly discussed. The study indicates that the solar pond cay be regarded as a potential heat source and seasonal storage at high northern latitudes.

摘要:
The paper describes a residence designed and built to demonstrate that active and passive solar homes could be economically by conventional home builders. The systems were designed for simplicity and cost effectiveness. The home was built in 56 days with conventional building materials and built by labourers with no particular training in energy efficient building techniques. After one season of operation the energy use data shows impressive performance. The auxiliary fuel requirement for the heating season was only 0.035 MJ/m2°C-day (1.72 Btu/ft2°F-day).

摘要:
The paper briefly describes the proposals for tidal power generators for the river Severn UK and goes on to document the results of a pilot study carried out during 1982 to assess the attitude of local residents to the proposals and to various renewable energy conversion techniques. The research used interviews and group discussions as a means of determining attitudes to a series of photographs of appropriate equipment and situations. The photographs used are reproduced as part of the paper.
