The concept of an effective thermal capacitance for a thermal system has been investigated analytically. This parameter is not a constant characteristic of a system but varies for both steady-state and transient conditions. Representative results illustrating these chsnges have been obtained for (i) a closed system of a wall and the adjacent air layer and (ii) an open system of a solar-energy collector. The steady-state effective thermal capacitance for a solar-energy collector was found to be weakly dependent on the applied conditions. Thus it can be assumed as constant for most engineering purposes. However, under transient conditions it undergoes significant variations. The validity of various methods previously used to determine the effective thermal capacitance is discussed.

This paper examines Danish considerations and experience. Localization—the indication of the exact location—has a decisive influence on the profitability of a wind turbine project. By means of the Wind Atlas the annual energy production from a given turbine at a given site can be estimated. In siting, a number of conflicting interests must be weighed against each other. For the large-scale production of electricity, wind farms are required. In Denmark a national localization survey for wind farms producing 4 TWh/year was carried out. The study delimitates 28 areas within which the first 250 wind turbines, each rated at 2.5 MW, can produce 2 TWh/year. The possibility of offshore siting has been investigated as well as the attitudes of the local politicians and the citizens towards a wind farm. The marketing of larger and cheaper wind turbines makes the inclusion of wind energy in physical planning difficult.

Substantial controversy has been produced from the location of over 4000 wind turbines in San Gorgonio Pass, California. The principal point of controversy is the conflicting land use which results from developing wind power in a populated area. A public opinion survey was conducted which demonstrated that the vocal opposition to the wind turbines so commonly expressed is not borne out in fact. While there is indeed some opposition to the development of wind power at this site, particularly in terms of aesthetic degradation, the majority of respondents favoured the development. This level of approval will be of interest to those developing large wind projects elsewhere.

The paper describes experience of greenhouse construction on the roofs of buildings and their heating design with the use of secondary energy resources, particularly the vent air exhausted from a building. This air warms the cold internal surface of the glazing and compensates for the heat losses in the greenhouse before being rejected to the surroundings.
