摘要:
Incidence of solar radiation on an arbitrary surface is required for a variety of applications such as agricultural meteorology, photobiology, animal husbandry, daylighting, comfort air conditioning, building architecture and solar energy utilization. Estimation of insolation on a horizontal surface is the first step in almost all instances. Global radiation is recorded at more locations than its diffuse counterpart, and daily sunshine duration measuring stations are far more numerous than the radition measuring stations. The use is made of monthly averaged daily, individual daily, monthly averaged hourly and individual hourly irradiation according to the degree of sophistication required and the associated costs involved concerning man-hours and computing time. This paper reviews the progress made in this respect with particular reference to the United Kingdom. Theoretical proof of generally accepted concept, that the correlations between averaged and individual values of global and diffuse irradiation are fundamentally different, is also presented.

摘要:
The use of natural sources of energy such as solar energy or natural cooling can reduce the energy used by the HVAC systems. The analysis of the energy savings due to the economizer systems, which use “free-cooling”, is carried out for Montreal climate, using hourly weather data monitored between 1974 and 1983. The results can be used in the preliminary design stage of the HVAC systems, and show that important cooling energy savings could be obtained by using the ambient energy.

This paper is based on a talk given by invitation, to the “Energy Options Conference” organised by the Institution of Electrical Engineers at Reading University in 1987 [1]. The presentation was intended to give a broad view of activities in wind energy from the smallest scale (Watts) to the largest scale (Gigawatts). The paper is not intended for experts in wind energy, but should give a helpful impression of the new burgeoning field of wind energy engineering to those uninitiated into the subject.

摘要:
A solar dryer was designed for drying yam (Dioscorea rotundata) flakes and cassava (Manihot utilissima) chips and constructed from locally available materials. The performance of the dryer was tested and yielded very promising results. One major factor considered in the design was to ensure ease of fabrication with readily available local materials. Details of the design features and construction are provided together with the diurnal variations in temperature and moisture content of the test samples.
