摘要:
A somewhat qualitative method of climate analysis based on the psychrometric chart has already been described by the author [1]. This paper extends the analysis by presenting a more precise definition using two new climatic index numbers. It is hoped that this approach will provide a greater insight to passive control techniques.

摘要:
Non-tracking collectors are the important technology options to harness the solar thermal energy at temperatures below 100°C. Thermal energy below this level has very wide applications in the residential and industrial sectors. Also, energy at this level can be used indirectly to produce cooling, fresh water or electricity. Flat plate and evacuated tube collectors with different design, configuration and cost were considered and their energy collection capabilities were estimated under the Kuwaiti conditions for different applications identified with the temperature. Based on the manufacturers' quotations and other economic parameters, the annual amortized cost of solar collectors were estimated. These values were used to estimate the system cost per unit of energy generation. A domestic solar water heater with an unglazed collector is the only solar system having economic viability at present. Evacuated tube collectors stand a good chance of being economically viable in future with increase in fuel prices and/or reduction in system cost.

摘要:
This paper extends the author's previous work on the formulation of criteria for comparing the performance of real and ideal processes through the use of finite-time processes. The efficiency for the finite-time Carnot cycle at maximum power is derived. This is followed by an expression for the power output of the finite-time Brayton cycle. However, this is considered to be too complex to yield simple analytical solutions and a numerical solution is given. Finally the efficiency of a Carnot cycle, a finite-time Carnot cycle and a finite-time Brayton cycle are compared, showing that the latter cycle can provide a more suitable basis for real engine design.

摘要:
This paper presents performance and cost-evaluation studies of a solid desiccant solar cooling system. A fixed bed adiabatic dehumidifier model and a standard flat-plate solar collector option have been considered to investigate the overall desiccant cooling system performance as a function of regeneration temperature and the effectiveness of the heat exchangers. The economics of a solar regeneration dehumidifier based cooling system has also been evaluated for one Ton of cooling capacity equivalent and a comparative study using other energy sources has also been made. It was found that the solar option would be the cheapest and hence the solid desiccant solar cooling system can be made cost effective.

摘要:
Eight different types of thermal insulation materials were studied and evaluated, with respect to their thermal performance and their impact on space indoor temperature and space cooling and/or heating load in a hot-dry climate context. A predefined computer program, using the transient heat transfer method and thermal response factor method, was utilized as the main research tool for investigation. The study showed significant differences with respect to thermal performance when utilizing different thermal insulation materials of buildings to newly designed and/or retrofitted buildings.
