摘要:
Mini-OTEC, a small proof of concept closed cycle OTEC net power generating system, was conceived in June 1977 by the author and Joseph Rynewicz of the Ocean Systems Division of the Lockheed Missiles and Space Company. Two years later three major partners, the State of Hawaii, Lockheed Missiles and Space Company and the Dillingham Corporation, had a 50kW (18kW Net) OTEC plant in place and operational off the coast of the Island of Hawaii. It achieved its design goals, and its performance closely followed theoretical predictions.

摘要:
This paper deals with the approach taken, the equipment and controls used, the problems encountered and the performance to-date of the solar domestic water-heating systems at present being monitored by the Electricity supply Board in Ireland. It will be seen how the problem of an unsuitable roof orientation was overcome and why it is necessary to ensure that the control equipment is of a high quality. The performance of some of the systems has been disappointing while others have proved themselves extremely well. The initial costs of purchasing and installing a solar water-heating system and the estimated payback period are both given. Finally, there is a review of the experience gained so far, and the future work which will be undertaken is set out.

For most of man's life on earth the bulk of his energy needs have been met by the combustion of wood. The advent of the Industrial Revolution and the mining of coal in 18th century England led to dependence upon initially fossil, and later fossil and fissile, fuels within the industrialized nations and fuelwood consumption rapidly declined. Biomass (organic plant matter) has, however, continued to provide the main energy supply to the developing world.

摘要:
The design of buildings to provide a suitable thermal environment is discussed and the reasons for artificial heating or cooling introduced. The problem of sizing a solar-powered cooling plant is investigated. An iterative method of estimating heat flow and resultant temperatures in buildings subject to fluctuating heat loads is described. A model is developed to allow investigation of the performance of a solar collector and thermal storage system and some of the basic relationships between performance and physical parameters are determined.
