In order to match the complexity and diversity of energy systems installed in real buildings, any computer program addressing the problem of simulating the performance of such systems for design or analysis purposes must embody a high degree of flexibility. In recent years, developments in the field of component based HVAC system simulation have provided the means for performing accurate analysis of a very much wider range of system configurations than was possible before. The full benefit of these developments can only be realized, however, if the analysis software is linked to the user interface which makes the input and editing of complex system models a rapid and easy task. This paper reviews the capabilities required of HVAC system simulation and describes how the principles of component based simulation and interactive graphics have been implemented in Amazon Energy's software packageB. A review has been undertaken of the numerical computation of air movement and convective heat transfer within buildings. The fundamental conservation equations together with a turbulence model are described, and a numerical procedure for solving the elliptic partial differential equations is outlined. The literature on the subject, spanning the past twelve years, is reviewed. Attention is briefly drawn to examples of the use of numerical air movement codes.
