Energy usage in buildings contributes significantly towards carbon dioxide emissions. A reduction in energy consumption by domestic premises alone would help to alleviate this problem. In the UK, while legislation has raised insulation standards, the traditional methods for home heating have remained largely unchanged. This paper describes a domestic heating system comprising a solar-assisted heat pump and thermal store in which the conventional tiled roof acts as the solar collector. The system is installed in a house near Basingstoke, UK, and has been monitored over a heating season. A validated energy flow analysis is presented, together with in-situ performance characteristics of the roof collector system and heat pump. It is shown that the test system in its present form saves 55% of the energy consumption of a gas-fired central heating system using a non-condensing boiler. Economic comparison in terms of present worth shows that a modified version of the test system would be better than electric storage heating and second only to gas central heating. A further-modified system is suggested with the potential to economically displace gas central heating as well as to provide energy savings for the consumer.

A power output limit of a solar pond heat engine is analyzed from a finite-time thermodynamic point of view. The pond's water is viewed as the working fluid of a heat engine where the heat input is solar radiation and heat rejection is to the ambient air.

The ventilation requirements of a low energy house are assessed, and measurements are presented of the performance of the mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system which was installed. The results are discussed in terms of energy and financial savings. The ventilation system is necessary for healthy habitation, and energy is saved by reducing uncontrolled ventilation, but the savings due to heat recovery are not justified economically.

The advent and deployment of significant levels of photovoltaic and wind energy generation in the spatially dispersed mode (i.e. residential and intermediate load centres) may have deleterious effects upon existing protective relay equipment and its time-current co-ordination on radial distribution circuits to which power conditioning equipment may be connected for power sell-back purposes. Note that significant in this context is now generally agreed to mean greater than 50% of a feeder's minimum load capacity rating.
