David Guest, who is Professor of Occupational Psychology at Birkbeck College, and Kim Hoque, who is Research Officer in the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics and Political Science, draw on a postal survey of nearly 350 new establishments to consider their propensity to unionise, to adopt practices associated with HRM, and to deliver a number of performance outcomes. John Gennard and James Kelly, who are Professor and Senior Lecturer respectively in the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Strathclyde, use data from semi‐structured interviews with a number of personnel directors to consider whether, in their view, there is a new HRM paradigm and, if so, whether there is revolution/discontinuity or evolution/continuity with personnel management. Adrian Wilkinson and Mick Marchington, who are Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Industrial Relations at the Manchester School of Management, consider the long‐running debate about the role of the personnel function and, in particular, the argument that line managers are now taking the lead in the development of HR initiatives. Colin Hales, who is a Lecturer in Management Studies at the University of Surrey, reviews the different meanings of the term ‘internal marketing’ and develops a critique of its application to the management of human resources. Helen Rainbird, who is Reader in Social Sciences at Nene College, Northampton, draws on detailed case study evidence from 21 undertakings in the public and private sector to consider the organisation of the training function. She finds that, although the integration of the training function into other policy areas, and of employees through involvement in training programmes, had not occurred to a great extent, nevertheless some of the undertakings had shown themselves capable of developing a more strategic approach to training. This was notably the case in two high technology companies, operating in highly competitive international markets, and in the public sector, where there was a stronger tradition and culture of training.

Hugh McCredie, Group Staff Manager of Glynwed International, and Viv Shackleton, Senior Lecturer in Work Psychology at Aston Business School, describe the design of a dimensionally based assessment centre for potential general managers and give an interim evaluation of the centre's operation. While confirming some of the doubts expressed by critics about the usefulness of such dimensions in arriving at overall assessment ratings, they make a case for their value in terms of longer term career progression and training/development action arising out of attendance at the centre.
