摘要:
John Shipton and John McAuley, who are respectively Course Leader of the Part‐Time MBA Programme and Head of Postgraduate and Post Experience Programmes at Sheffield Business School, discuss the ‘business manager’ model of the personnel manager which has been a feature of much discussion in the personnel profession. They argue that it is based on a narrow and, ultimately, dysfunctional analysis of power which sees leadership as encouraging people to go in the direction they were going anyway. More useful, they suggest, is to develop the role of the personnel practitioner in accord with the principles and practices of organisation devel

摘要:
Sue Newell, from the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, University of Birmingham, and Viv Shackleton, from Aston University Business School, report on a survey of the use of psychometric tests in selection and in training and development. They argue that, while the majority of test users appear to have recognised the importance of training those who administer and interpret test results, the provision of discussion time, or even simple feedback of test results, is not universally practised. This is especially so in the case of tests used in selection.

摘要:
Diane Preston, who is Lecturer in Human Resource Management at Loughborough University Business School, draws on a study of graduates from four sites of a multinational chemical company to discuss the process of socialisation of new managers. She argues that of particular significance is the new managers’ relationship with their own manager; where the manager is supportive and encouraging, this creates a positive lens through which other organisational activities are see

摘要:
Bryn Jones, Peter Scott, Brian Bolton and Alan Bramley discuss the results of their cross‐sectoral study of manufacturing firms in the UK. They find that policy of treating graduate engineers as an elite human resource is mostly confined to consortia having international cooperative links and to companies with ‘central interventionist’ HRD policies. the high degree of decentralisation characteristic of UK‐owned companies, however, combined with the disproportionate recruitment of non‐engineer managers, restricted the career development of engineers. All four authors are from the University of Bath. Bryn Jones and Peter Scott are from the School of Social Sciences. Brian Bolton and Alan Bramley are from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and the School of Mechanical En

摘要:
Chris Brewster, who is Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management at Cranfield School of Management, discusses the role of the international manager in multinational companies. He draws on original survey data from British and Swedish owned companies to consider whether the nature of the role is to operate effectively in the host country, learning their ways and adjusting to them; or is to bring to the host country the style and expertise available from headquarters. the tendency, he sugests, is for managers to adapt to the host countries’ working environment much more than has previously been understoo

摘要:
Jon Clark, who is Professor of Industrial Relations at Southampton University, comments on one of the most important issues raised in John Storey'sDevelopments in the Management of Human Resources: the contrast between the ‘procedure and consistency’ of the IR/ personnel tradition and the ‘business need, flexibility and commitment’ of the HRM tradition. In particular, he queries whether HRM can be successful without a firm basis in ‘procedure and con
