摘要:
Jill Rubery, who is Senior Lecturer at the Manchester School of Management, and Sara Horrell, Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics, University of Cambridge, draw on a study for the Equal Opportunities Commission to discuss the significance of the competitive conditions said to lie behind changes in working time. They argue that the existing approaches to understanding these changes – they are ‘determined’ by the ‘market/technology’ or relate to a redefinition of power relations within the workplace – are both inadequate. What is required, they suggest, is a more complex analysis of competition which takes into account both the factors that shape market conditions and the factors inside the organisation that influence respon

摘要:
Amanda Sinclair and Jill Ewing report on a detailed study of women managers in a large retailing organisation to discuss why women are a poorly utilised and misunderstood reserve of managerial talent. They identify three main groups‐ ‘family first job occupants’, ‘mature career traditionalists’ and ‘career‐family committeds’‐ and show how each has different aspirations and correspondingly different attitudes to organisational incentives. the message to policy‐makers is that they need to ‘customise’ their practices in order to relaise benefits both for their women managers and their organisations.Amanda Sinclair is Associate Professor in Organisational Studies at the Graduate School of Management of the University of Melbourne. Jill Ewing is a postgraduate student in the same university and a Senior Research Assistant at the Key Centre for Wo

摘要:
Kathy Monks, who is a Lecturer in Human Resource Management at Dublin City University Business School, discusses the results of a survey of the roles and responsibilities of personnel managers in Eire. She describes four main models of personnel practice which she found and compares them with those developed by Tyson and Fell in 1986 drawing on research in the UK. She goes on to consider why organisations adopt simple or complex personnel management pratices.

摘要:
Emmanuel Ogbonna, who is a Lecturer in Human Resource Management at Cardiff Business School, offers a critique of the burgeoning literature on managing organisational culture. He asks whether, after ten years of ‘sanctimonious devotion’, we are any closer to understanding culture; whether we are yet in a position to generate a conceptual model of managing organisational culture; or whether we have simply succeeded in e xposing the inherent weaknesses of such a not

摘要:
Robin Jacobs and Robert Bolton argue that, although competency‐based assessment methods have improved the haphazard management development practices of the past, they nonetheless provide an incomplete picture for improving performance and developing potential. They suggest that self‐development through a career planning framework might provide the missing link and present a case study in this area based on their work in the Nationwide Building Society.Robin Jacobs is a Lecturer in Management at the Open University Business School as well as one of the directors of Transitions Limited, and Robert Bolton is Human Resources Manager at the Nationwide Building Soci
