This paper concerns the evaluation of the non-linear system comprising a linear dynamic element embedded between two zero-memory non-linear elements. Previous work on the evaluation of non-linear systems has centred on the use of random inputs associated with analysis in terms of kernels, and has not been applied to this configuration. An alternative approach has been investigated in which the response of the output to a single input pulse is measured for pulses of several amplitudes. The resulting technique has yielded successful evaluation of several such systems in a computer simulation.

A design method for state-feedback controllers for single-input non-linear systems is proposed. The method makes use of the transformations of the non-linear system into ‘controllable-like’ canonical forms. The resulting non-linear state feedback is designed in such a way that the eigenvalues of the linearized closed-loop model are invariant with respect to any constant operating point. The method constitutes an alternative approach to the design methodology recently proposed by Baumann and Rugh. Also a review of different transformation methods for non-linear systems is presented. An example and simulation results of different control strategies are provided to illustrate the design technique.

A local treatment of the block input-output decoupling problem is given for discrete-time non-linear control systems. The major tools employed are the invariant and locally-controlled invariant distributions that have recently been extended to the discrete-time domain. A sufficient condition for the solvability of the problem with local stability about an equilibrium point is also given.

Trigonometric polynomials are used to approximate the state trajectory, the control and the functions in differential equations and in the criterion of the constrained optimal periodic control problem. Several discretized problems using such polynomials are proposed to approximate the problem considered. Sufficient conditions for the convergence of solutions of approximating problems to the optimal solution of the basic problem are given. The application to a class of optimal periodic control problems in chemical engineering is discussed.

We consider linear dynamical systems containing uncertain elements owing to imperfect knowledge about the model, the input and, sometimes, the state as well. Subject to these uncertainties, we seek controllers that guarantee that all possible responses of the system behave in a desired fashion. The results are illustrated by two examples.

In this paper new sets of algebraic stability criteria for linear time-invariant continuous-time systems are presented as a generalization of Markov's stability theorem. They are expressed as a series of inequalities for the Hankel determinants whose elements consist of the two kinds of Taylor coefficients associated with the characteristic polynomial of the systems. Results are derived that have close relations to the continued-fraction expansion and Padé approximation theory.
