The idea of column reduction of a 2D polynomial matrix is defined and related to the properness of a transfer function matrix. In particular, for a 2D transfer function matrixH(z1,z2) =N(z1,z2)D−1(z1,z2), some conditions are given onN(z1,z2) andD(z1,z2) to ensure thatH(z1,z2) is proper.
