Extracts are reproduced from Maxwell's manuscript notebooks, written during the period 1860-1865 when he was at King's College, London. They suggest that he had developed several of the ideas in his paper’ On Governors ’ some years before it was published in 1868. A discussion is given of some of the circumstances in which his paper was written, and comments are added on its subsequent influence.

摘要:
The approximate state reconstruction of a class of singularly perturbed linear time-varying systems is considered through separate full-order observer design for two lower dimensional subsystems in two different time-scales. A composite full-order observer is synthesized from the separate observers, the mutually independent gains of which do not require knowledge of the small singular perturbation parameter. ¦ The composite observer is shown to be the dual of a recent stabilizing feedback controller design.

摘要:
A general non-linear filter is derived for dynamic systems described by partial differential equations containing a small parameter multiplying the time derivatives of some state variables. By allowing this small parameter to approach zero, it is possible to approximate the system filter equations by low-order slow and fast filters. As an example, a fixed-bed chemical reactor is used to demonstrate the application of the present theory.

In this paper a method is described for designing linear multivariable control schemes which have a closed-loop frequency response as close as possible, in a least squares sense, to a desired response. After using characteristic gain loci to ensure system stability, the closed-loop Bode array gives easily understood information about the controlled system in terms of bandwidth, speed of response, resonance and interaction. The closed-loop Nyquist array indicates the robustness of the control scheme for sensor failures ; it also indicates the extent to which state and input noise will be suppressed, since the feedback just multiplies the open-loop disturbances by a unit matrix minus the closed-loop frequency response. Bands of Gershgorin and Ostrowski circles are used to indicate the behaviour for changes in the characteristics of more than one sensor at a time. A similar frequency-response array, obtained by breaking the feedback loops next to the actuators instead of next to the sensors, can be used to predict the behaviour of the controlled system for actuator failures. Parameter sensitivity can be investigated by determining the rate of change of the closed-loop frequency response with changes in the parameter concerned.

摘要:
A procedure is presented for the design of feedback controllers for zeroing the output, in finite time, of multivariable delay-differential systems. An algebraic approach is used, where distributions (generalized functions) and module theory are introduced. The computations needed to obtain the controllers can be carried out within a purely algebraic framework. The resulting feedback controllers can be realized by interconnections of integrators and delay elements.

摘要:
The output controllability condition of the class of time-invariant multivariable linear delay-differential systems is investigated by using an algebraic approach. The controllability condition is given in terms of the kernel of a map, which determines the behaviour of output after time t = 0 due to input up to t = 0. This kernel is then completely characterized by a module generated by the columns of a matrix directly computable from the system transfer function. It is shown that every reachable output of the system considered can be controlled to zero in finite time.

This paper is concerned with the problem of determining eigenvalues, retained in Marshall's reduced order model, which have the largest effect on the retaining state vector or give the best approximate reduced system in the sense of ISE criterion. The main objective is to show that the usual choice of eigenvalues in Marshall's model reduction technique (decomposition of eigenvalues into fast modes and slow modes) does not necessarily give a well approximated reduced order model. Here the measure of approximation is defined and calculated by means of ISE criterion. The effectiveness of this method is explained by two illustrative examples.

Consider the constrained part (denoted as the plant) of a control system, consisting ofncascaded sections, each of whose outputs can be sensed for feedback purposes. Feedback from these points is to be used to achievea priorispecified tolerances on the system response, despite great uncertainty in plant parameter values. In this first quantitative work of its kind, the feedback is permitted to proceed directly to internal plant variables, constituting ‘ plant modification ’. The reason is that the internal plant signal levels needed to achieve a specific output are now affected by the feedback loops. This is in contrast to previous quantitative research in which the feedback was confined to the plant input. The plant signal levels needed to achieve a specific output were then not influenced by the feedback.
