The discrete regulator problem with a singular state matrix cannot be solved using either the eigenvectors or the sign function of the associated compound matrix, since then, the implicit equation defining the feedback matrix cannot be transformed into the regular discrete Riccati equation. In this paper, it is shown that the solution of a continuous Riccati equation, whose matrix parameters depend on the matrices of both discrete system and cost functional, is the solution of the implicit equation. Since the continuous Riccati equation has symmetric spectrum with respect to the imaginary axis, it has no singularity problem and therefore the matrix sign function method can be used for its solution.

The Routh algorithm is known to be the simplest method for continued fraction expansion and inversion but it faces a serious limitation when the first column entry of any row of the Routh table becomes zero (but not a zero row). In this paper a remedy for such situations is proposed by rearranging the coefficients of the row in which zero entry has occurred in the first column of the Routh table. All possible cases, where the first column entry of the Routh table may become zero, are discussed for Cauer's first and second forms and are illustrated by numerical examples. The coefficients of the rearranged Routh table are also calculated by the usual Routh algorithm, hence it is equally suitable for digital computation.

摘要:
This paper presents a method of including the effect, of unknown initial conditions in the general algorithms for transfer function synthesis recently developed by the authors (Saha and Prasada Rao 1979) via Poisson moment functionals. The proposed technique is of considerable practical importance in problems of parameter identification in which input-output data is available on an arbitrary but active interval of time. The technique is tested with process data containing zero mean noise and is found to be remarkably immune to such noise.

The problem of deadbeat controller design for a class of discrete-time linear multi-variable systems with inaccessible state is considered. A deadbeat controller, based upon a minimal-order observer, and specified by two gain matrices in compact form, is presented which can drive the system state from any arbitrary initial state to the origin in at most νc+ ν0— 1 steps where νcand ν0respectively are the controllability and observability indices of the system. The simplicity and generality of the design is demonstrated by numerical example.

A modified form of the Smith predictor (Smith 1957, 1959) for systems with significant dead times is proposed and analysed using singular Nyquist arrays. This new controller eliminates steady state offset errors using only proportional control elements. A design procedure for the predictor is developed using the methods of Rosenbrock (1969, 1974) and Kantor and Andres (1979). This procedure explicitly accounts for the effects of process modelling errors. An illustrative example comparing the new controller with the traditional Smith controller and with PI control shows the decided advantages of the predictor.

For plants with invertible transfer matrices, now necessary and sufficient conditions are given for decoupling by constant gain output feedback and by dynamic output feedback. If the latter are not met, a dynamic pre-compensator is required. Design techniques associated with the approach are discussed.

In a previous paper (Ottoy 1979) a perturbation method for second order non-linear differential equations was explained. In this paper an application of the method is treated for the differential equation : $. For this equation, which is perturbed by a Van der Pol damping factor, the non-perturbed solutions are periodic and can be expressed with the elliptic functions of Jacobi. Not only excellent solution accuracy, but also an approximation of the equation of the limit-cycle is obtained.
