摘要:
In one of his manuscripts, Maxwell investigated the effect of random collisions among the particles constituting Saturn's rings. A stable steady state was assumed for the stochastic variables involved, and some parameters were calculated. It was concluded that the rings gradually approach the planet, owing to the energy loss involved in the collisions. In the present paper the manuscript is reproduced, and an attempt is made to extend the investigation beyond the unfinished state in which Maxwell left it.

摘要:
The class of distributed systems generated by spectral operators is an important one and includes the many differential operators arising in boundary-value problems involving non-symmetric linear differential operators, whose eigenfunction expansions converge in much the same way as Fourier series. Thus they enjoy many of the properties of systems generated by self-adjoint operators. We examine here some of the implications in linear systems theory.

摘要:
In the practical application of many design control problems with integral controllers (such as tracking systems), two undesirable side effects can occur : (a) actuator saturation and (b) integrator wind-up. Both of these concepts are examined in this paper and general design guidelines are proposed for the solution to these problems, for high-order, multi-input, multi-output systems.

摘要:
A hierarchical scheme is proposed for the optimal control of large-scale non-linear systems with multiple state and control delays. A linear approximation of a nonlinear system is defined about the precomputed and stored nominal trajectories. The system is then decomposed into N subsystems such that the delay terms and interaction terms can be treated as an extra input, named perturbation, to the linear non-delay subsystems. The scheme generates a partly closed-loop and partly open-loop control. The convergence of the algorithm is established. An example with quadratic cost is simulated and solved by the proposed scheme using the constant nominal trajectories. The results of computer simulation of the two control problems presented in the examples are included.

摘要:
This paper gives a sufficient condition of normal local controllability at a point x0for a family of analytical vector fields. The families considered are of the following $ where Ω is a bounded subset of Rκ, The condition is of the first order, that is it depends only on the values of the fields and their first derivatives at x0. It is proved that this condition is the most general condition of this type. In fact, if this condition is not satisfied, there are families of vector fields which at the first order coincide with the given family, and which are not normally locally controllable at x0

摘要:
A closed-loop system is represented by a weighted directed graph which exhibits all couplings of the system in a very clear and simple manner. The coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of the closed-loop system may be obtained with the aid of cycle families in this graph. Based on this result, a criterion for the existence of fixed modes is derived. The multiplicities of fixed modes may also be determined graph-theoretically. The consequences of structural constraints on the output feedback pattern become evident. Decentralized feedback is discussed as a special case.

摘要:
A recursive design procedure is presented which assigns the closed-loop eigenstructure in linear quadratic regulators. At each stage, the required solution for the steady-state Riccati matrix which shifts a pole or pole pair to specified values is obtained. For pole pair placement, a free parameter in the solution permits selection of closed-loop eigenvectors. The interactive design procedure is summarized and illustrated by an example

摘要:
The paper generalizes, to the multivariable case, the results obtained by the authors in a previous paper concerning the design of an optimal digital controller. The stochastic plant is described by its transfer function matrix and the objective is the minimization of a linear combination of quadratic measures of system inputs and outputs on an infinite time range. The design procedure uses polynomial algebraic techniques and requires only the solution of a system of two polynomial matrix equations. The results are extended to the case when the matrix obtained from spectral factorization is not of full rank.

摘要:
Environmental excitation is added to the naive Lotka-Volterra model of interacting populations to yield modified equations. These lend themselves to experimental investigation by means of a very simple, but highly non-linear, electronic analogue. Unexpected random behaviour and subharmonic entrainment are observed.
