摘要:
This paper considers a problem of regulator design for linear systems with slowly varying measurable disturbances. The design procedure for such regulator systems is doveloped by introducing the notion of prescribed, disturbance-dependent steady states. In this approach, steady states are not necessarily zero, as they have to be in the standard regulator solution.

摘要:
Identifying modal analysis as the Galerkin (projection) method, the paper provides general conditions for applying the modal technique to the optimal control system synthesis of a nuclear reactor. It is shown that under some very general restrictions on the performance index the Galerkin method is applicable to the Hamilton-Jacobi canonical equations whenever they are applicable to the equations describing the mathematical model of a reactor. Using the Keldish theory of operator families, the conditions for completeness of the eigenvectors of the Hamilton-Jacobi operator are established. If these vectors are used as expanding functions in the Galerkin method a rather simple algorithm for computing the optimal control law can be obtained. The paper also provides an iterative variational method for the solution of an eigenvalue problem, which enables on-line implementation of the overall optimization algorithm through a two-level control system. Reactor models for a power control system and a flux distribution control system synthesis ore particularly investigated. The methods are illustrated in a simple example of a slab reactor.

摘要:
A technique of quasilinearization is developed and applied to the problem of identifying the unknown parameters in strobed tracer-kinetic compartmental systems of known topology. The method has particular value in finding functional relations between elements of physiological processes that function in a fundamentally rhythmic or cyclic manner.

摘要:
This paper describes a new algorithm for the automated design of compensators for space booster control systems. Use of this algorithm results in the selection of a forward-loop compensation filter (or filters, if filter switching is used), and a compatible time-dependent gain schedule which will stabilize the booster for a complete ascent stage by producing an open-loop gain versus phase response which satisfies a set of specified stability margins at critical flight times. The digital computer routine is based on minimizing a non-linear penalty function which is a function of the violations of the specified stability margins. Gradient search techniques are used to carry out the minimization of the penalty function. The results of considerable experience with the use of this programme by the authors and by several design engineers who were not involved in the development of the algorithm are summarized. These results clearly establish the substantial time and cost savings achieved by use of the automated design routine over design by the more conventional and classical Computer-aided design techniques available prior to development of the algorithm. Some convergence problems encountered during development of the programme are discussed and the results of various relatively successful attempts to resolve these problems are presented. Finally, some planned improvements and extensions of the algorithm are described.

摘要:
In this paper a generalized procedure is presented by which the existence and stability of limit cycles can be examined in a single-loop feedback system with multiple memory-less non-linear characteristics. The method is based upon the describing Function technique and has been programmed for the digital computer to handle complex and high-order systems. Nevertheless, the method is equally applicable in the absence of computational facilities. Several examples illustrate the proposed technique.

摘要:
The present work is concerned with the problem of designing appropriate weighting matrices for the performance index of the linear regulator optimization problem, guch that the resulting optimal policy satisfies given eigenvalue requirements. The text provides an algorithm for deriving a diagonal state-weighting matrix according to these eigenvalue requirements, the latter often being better defined than the requirements for the stato-weighting matrix. The solution given employs matrix differential calculus and a static gradient minimization sub-routine to minimize an eigenvalue error criterion, thus facilitating optimal control within desired eigenvalue requirements.

摘要:
It is noted that the fixed cost flow problem in the most general case can be converted to a special case for which efficient solutions are available. Properties of solutions are discussed and an approximate solution is presented for a certain class of such problems. Finally, a combinatorial problem is considered and discussed.

摘要:
A continuous stirred tank reactor operating around a stable equilibrium point and having interaction may become unstable when made noii-intcractivo by tho addition of compensators. Procedures for selecting the settings of tho feedback controllers to obtain any desired degree of stability in the non-interacting system are worked out in this paper. A numerical example of a continuous stirred tank reactor with an irreversible, exothermic first-order reaction is taken and controller settings for its stable non-interacting operation worked out.

摘要:
The use of pseudo-random binary sequences (p.r.b.s.) as system input perturbations has become standard practice in the field of identification. Normally, cross-correlation between input and output yields the system impulse response. This is not so if the actual input is a distorted p.r.b.s., the distortion taking tho form of unequal switching delays. This paper describes a theoretical approach which allows calculation of the effects of such distortion on the impulse response estimates. Using these results, a method is devised to remove the effects of a second typo,of distortion, i.e. that which results from unequal input transdvicer time constants. The proposed method allows the removal of secondary peaks but results in increased distortion of parent peaks. A second method, using inverse-repeat sequences, is also investigated. Simulation results are included.
