This paper considers the problem of designing optimal dynamic controllers, based on a partial state observer, for discrete-time linear time-invariant systems with inaccessible state. It is assumed that the initial system state is an unknown random vector with known mean and covariance. The performance index is taken to be the expectation, with respect to the initial state, of the standard quadratic one for the discrete-time regulator. Necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality are derived, provided that the subspace which ensures the existence of a partial state observer, is given. A design algorithm is also obtained which can be directly solved for the parameters of the optimal observer and requires the solution of a matrix Riccati equation of the observer order. As in the continuous-time case, the separation property in the restricted sense is seen to hold. Finally an example is presented to illustrate the procedure.

Optimal control of linear discrete time stochastic systems with an amplitude constraint on the input is considered. A suboptimal controller is obtained by considering linear feedback laws with saturation. The variances of the closed-loop system are evaluated by approximating the stationary probability distribution of the state with a gaussian distribution. The gradient of the loss with respect to the feedback gain is evaluated, and an iterative algorithm to optimize the regulator parameters is given. Numerical examples are used to evaluate the control performance of the suboptimal strategy. The obtained loss is compared with a lower bound on the minimum of the loss which is achievable in amplitude constrained control. The results show that the suboptimal strategy may give near-optimal control performance

Using factorizations at infinity of the transfer matrix, two interesting necessary and sufficient conditions arc obtained for the block decoupling problem of linear systems by state feedback and a constant non-singular input transformation. Sufficient conditions for the stabilization by a memoryless feedback of the system with time-delay are derived. The main results are as follows. (1) If we can place the maximal eigenvalue of some matrix sufficiently left in the left-hand plane, the system with time-delay can be stabilized by a memoryless feedback. The main objective of this paper is to delineate conditions under which deadbeat error control can be achieved between, a plant output and a discrete reference input. signal. All facets of this problem are considered in the linear multivariable case. i.e. when the reference is any non-diminishing signal, whether the plant is truly discrete or a discretized continuous one, and whether the initial conditions are zero or unknown. The results presented can also be used to resolve the case of known, non-zero initial conditions on the state of the plant as well as the compensator.
