Analogue computing techniques are used to study the transition of a turbine shaft through its critical speed for the general case of a time-varying applied torque. The variation in the maximum amplitude of shaft deflection is studied and a feedback control system devised which keeps the shaft deflection within stipulated limits.

This paper constitutes the second part of an investigation of the dual control of long duration stationary ergodic discrete Markov processes. In it the concept of decision space is introduced as a theoretical framework within which the performances of different control strategies may be compared. The evolution of a strategy is described in terms of a decision trajectory which converges by descending a ‘ hill of uncertainty ’. A study of the trajectory of the ideal strategy leads to a generalization of the definition of optimality. The existence of a whole class of sub-optimal strategies is demonstrated; it is shown that the optimal strategy of part I is a member of the class, and that any other member may be optimal also under certain conditions. Two examples of sub-optimal strategies are presented, one involving the estimation of confidence intervals, the other using a learning reinforcement technique.

Finite regions of attraction of the equilibrium are obtained for the problem of Lur'o when the Popov sector condition in satisfied only over a finite or semi-infinite interval. Given this interval, regions of attraction may be specified with or without other knowledge of the nature of the non-linearity. This specification is performed using Liapunov functions constructed by the Kalman procedure and therefore is completely automatic.

In this paper the study of a class of linear second-order time dependent systems, wherein the law of time dependency is specified either deterministic- cally or stochastically, has been undertaken. The responses of such systems have been obtained analytically and these exact solutions have the necessary number of arbitrary constants to fit the initial conditions. Also, the statistical properties of the response have been presented for the case of systems with randomly varying parameters.

摘要:
A high steady-state accuracy in a feedback control system requires a large value of forward loop gain. However, when such systems are subjected to large values of step-input, the values of different state variables may be far in excess of those for which the system has been designed for normal operation. In this article a new dual-mode servo scheme has been discussed which, while responding to large step-inputs, not only keeps the state variables in safe limit but also gives reasonably fast response. As the name suggests, this system operates in two modes, viz. the relay mode and the linear mode, and even for high order systems the switch-over from one mode to another mode is carried out by a linear switching computer constituted by an adder and a relay with deadzone.

The Popov frequency condition is shown to remain a sufficient condition for global asymptotic stability of the equilibrium of time-delay systems containing a time-varying non-linearity, provided the non-linearity satisfies a certain time-varying sector condition. This sector reduces to the usual Popov sector in the time-invariant case.

The Popov criterion for the stability of linear, time-invariant, finite-dimensional systems with a single non-linearity has been generalized by a numbers of authors through a relaxation of the single non-linearity and the finite-dimensional constraints in order to be applicable to a wider range of practical problems. This paper extends these results further by relaxing the time-invariant constraint. It is shown that a covariance condition when satisfied is a sufficient condition for the system output to be bounded and square integrable for zero input conditions.

A non-linear sampled data system is analysed for the existence of low period oscillations. The non-linearity considered being the back-lash present in the gears, with inertia and viscous friction on either sides of the gears, and the system is analysed for different inputs. The method is rigorous and is illustrated by two examples.
