This paper represents a survey of the recent literature in the area of process identification and parameter estimation techniques applicable to lumped-parameter, deterministic, dynamical systems. Methods reviewed include statistical estimation techniques, direct and indirect methods based on optimal control theory, functional expansion, impulse response, frequency response and a number of other specific methods. Each method is presented in a consistent format which includes an outline of the general characteristics, calculational techniques, experimental techniques, reliability estimates and applications. The overall objective is to provide a basis for comparison of the methods and a guide to particular applications which will assist the reader in selecting the best method for his specific problem

In the past few years analysis of feedback systems with pulse-frequency modulation has been investigated using the continuous-time domain approach. This paper develops a non-linear discrete equivalence of a class of pulse-frequency modulation feedback systems. Using the non-linear discrete equivalence, stability of feedback systems with pulse-frequency modulation is analysed through the second method of Lyapunov.

The main purpose of this paper is to show a new technique for constructing a class ofq-nary type B1 codes by combining any number ofq-nary type B1 codes which are constructed by Hsu's method (Hsu 1969 a, b). If there arexdistinctq-nary type B1 codes, each is of rate (k− 1)/k, then thextype B1 codes can be combined to give a rate (xk− 1 )/xktype B1 recurrent codes. The use of theq-nary type B1 codes is very simple.

In this paper, a class of majority decodable solid burst-error correcting cyclic codes will be presented. The advantage of the cyclic codes presented is that the complexity of the decoding algorithm is independent of the multiplicity of the solid burst-error patterns. For the correction of single and double solid burst-error patterns, special parity check codes with modified decoding algorithm will be presented so that the number of check digits will be further reduced.

An explicit expression for the closed-loop system matrix of a partially uncontrollable linear system is presented. This matrix shows very clearly the eigenproperties of the closed-loop system and, in particular, the relationship between controllability and eigenvalue assignment.

An algorithm is presented for optimal linear fixed-point and fixed-lag smoothing in non-stationary linear discrete systems with multiple time delays. Relations derived previously in the problem of filtering are used directly to obtain the fixed-point and fixed-lag smoothing filters. The smoothing error covariance matrix is obtained via a recursive matrix equation. For the particular case of systems without delay terms, the algorithm defines new smoothing procedures.

A progressive computation technique is developed for updating optimal control functions throughout a control interval. The technique is simulated on an iterative analogue computer and experimental results indicate a considerable improvement over a single computation of control for the complete interval.

Studies of optimal stochastic control problems have drawn attention to three properties: separability, neutrality and certainty equivalence. The relationships between these properties have not yet been fully explored. This paper gives definitions of all three properties, summarizes well-known results about them and discusses the relationships between them. It is shown that separability is not the same as, but is a necessary condition for, certainty equivalence. It is conjectured that neutrality is a sufficient condition for certainty equivalence.

Optimal sampled-data controls for linear processes with quadratic criteria are determined through application of the discrete minimum principle. The effect of sampling on the closed-loop system's performance is investigated and the asymptotic behaviour of the optimal cost for large sampling periods is determined. The resulting design method is applicable to continuous, sampled-data and discrete regulators.
