摘要:
A global self‐orientations model of the relationship between subjective physical attractiveness and personality is described and tested. This model, which proposes that self‐esteem and two types of social desirability (self‐presentation and self‐deception) are causal antecedents in the self‐rated looks‐personality link, was supported in two studies. In Studies 1 (n= 243 females) and 2 (n= 160 males), self‐esteem and social desirability independently had an impact on self‐judgments of both physical attractiveness and personality, and statistically controlling for the impact of the global self‐orientations substantially reduced the covariation between subjective attractiveness and personality scores. In addition, consistent with previous research, self‐rated attractiveness was found to be significantly correlated with a wider range of personality attributes than was objec

摘要:
The paper presents two groups of objecting Israeli reserve soldiers who chose to resolve their dilemmas with the morally controversial war in Lebanon (1982–1985) in line with two different morally preferred actions. These soldiers either refused to join their unit on its assigned mission in Lebanon and paid the price of court martial and imprisonment, or chose to continue their military service but made extra sacrifices to preserve their moral principles on the battlefield, as well as voiced their objection via a protest group. The relationship between the objectors' hypothetical and actual moral knowledge is discusse

摘要:
This study examined the impact of reported pain level (low vs. high) and three other contextual factors on observers' perceptions of the symptoms and personality of persons with chronic low back pain. In addition to pain level, the availability of medical evidence, the valence of the relationship between the observer and the person in pain, and the amount of control the person in pain had over circumstances of pain onset were varied in a 2 × (2 × 2 × 2) mixed experimental design. Eighty undergraduate subjects read descriptions of hypothetical persons with chronic low back pain and then estimated the amount of pain, disability, and emotional distress they would expect the person to manifest. Subjects also described the target person's personality using 10 semantic differential scales. Significant main effects for medical evidence, relationship valence, and control emerged for personality ratings of adjustment, character, and judgment. Main effects emerged for medical evidence, relationship valence, and pain level on ratings of pain, disability, and distress. Significant two‐way, three‐way, and four‐way interactions also were found for symptom ratings. The results indicate that perceptions of chronic pain are sensitive to contextual factors, potentially biasing the assessment of persons with pain as a primary c

摘要:
The present study was designed to examine differences between respondents who recycled during a 2‐week observation period and those who did not. Of interest was the ability of factors drawn from Ajzen and Madden's (1986) theory of planned behavior and situational factors such as perceptions of borough councils' recycling programs to predict who would recycle. It was found that, although attitudes and intentions to recycle household newspapers were significant predictors of recycling behavior, factors associated with the inconvenience of recycling and the programs provided by borough councils, as well as respondents' past recycling behavior, were also significant predictor
