High and low self‐monitors heard either a physically attractive or unattractive source promote a new product with either strong or weak arguments. High self‐monitors were persuaded by the physically attractive source only when she presented strong arguments. In contrast, low self‐monitoring individuals were persuaded by the physically attractive source regardless of argument strength. Neither high nor low self‐monitors were persuaded by the physically unattractive source, regardless of the quality of the arguments she offered. Cognitive response and recall data suggest that high self‐monitors may have been systematically processing the physically attractive source's message and low self‐monitors may have been more heuristically processing her message. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for advertising

The effects of message fear arousal, fear of AIDS, and gender on attitudinal responses to condom advertisements were tested in a laboratory experiment. Ninety‐five male and 96 female college students, previously assessed for fear of getting AIDS, rated the effectiveness of 1 of 4 high‐fear or 4 low‐fear condom ads in motivating them to buy the product. Contrary to prediction, the high‐fear condom ads did not significantly differ from low‐fear ads in effectiveness. The prediction that subjects' fear of AIDS would interact with ad fear level was also not supported. However, subjects with a high fear of getting AIDS viewed ads as more effective than did low‐fear subjects. As predicted, male subjects viewed ads as more effective than did women. Results support the health belief model's tenet that a sense of vulnerability facilitates acceptance of a message. This study evaluated the effect of a persuasive message derived from a revised version of the theory of reasoned action on the performance of testicular self‐examination (TSE). Subjects (114 male college students) were randomly assigned to listen to a taped persuasive message challenging unfavorable outcome beliefs (as suggested by the theory of reasoned action), a message on testicular cancer information, or no message. All subjects then completed a questionnaire operationalizing the components of the theory of reasoned action (revised to incorporate self‐efficacy). As predicted, there was a significant relationship between exposure to the persuasive message and self‐reported TSE performance (χ2(2) = 15.66, p< .0001). Sixty‐three (71.23%) of the subjects contacted at a 4‐week follow‐up reported performing the exam. Of those, 44.23% had heard the theory‐based message, 36.54% had heard the informational message, and 19.23% had not been exposed to a message. The leaderless group discussion (LGD) has been used extensively for assessing leadership potential in a group setting. Personality measures administered prior to LGD have produced low correlations with effective LGD task behaviors in previous research. In addition to assessing characteristics of individuality and orientation to groups, factor measures (Buss, 1980) comprising the self‐monitoring construct (Snyder, 1974) were utilized. These measures of social and external environment cues explained the greatest amount of variance of the effective LGD performance measures as scored by trained raters. Based on the theory of reasoned action, the present research built separate models of turnover for baccalaureate and nonbaccalaureate nurses and for married and unmarried ones. A representative sample of 755 registered nurses completed the research questionnaire. Six months later, information was obtained from their hospitals concerning whether each nurse remained or resigned. Results were supportive of the theory of reasoned action. Furthermore, significant differences emerged in the predictors for the four subgroups. Moral obligation was found to be a significant predictor for intention only for baccalaureate and unmarried nurses. Part‐time versus full‐time employment status was found to be a significant predictor of turnover only for unmarried nurses. Past research on Indochinese refugees has shown that status inconsistency (loss of socioeconomic status from their last job in Indochina to their most recent job in the United States) has a strong negative effect on acculturation. This study examines refugee adaptation to working in America and the effect of status inconsistency on work performance. After three years in the U.S., there was great improvement in job performance. We had predicted that greater status inconsistency would be associated with poorer vocational performance. The status inconsistency effect was found for those refugees who previously held high‐prestige positions in their homeland, but only during the time before they had spent 3 years in America. Previous high‐prestige refugees who had lived in the U.S. for less than three years did not stay on their jobs as long as former low‐prestige refugees.
