摘要:
Substance use histories up to age 16 were obtained on 318 African-American males and 322 African-American females on whom systematic prospective data was available from the National Collaborative Perinatal Study. A number of childhood risk factors (family variables, subject's behavior) were found to predict to degree of substance use, or to frequency of alcohol use to intoxication. Not a single one of these risk factors applied to both genders. A clearer picture of the risk factors for early involvement in drug use appeared within the females, than for the male sample, including childhood psychopathology, relatively lower intellectual level, and relatively poorer academic performance.

摘要:
The adolescent form of the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI) was recently developed to detect chemical dependency. In this investigation, we explored possible relationships among SASSI scales, MMPI scales, and sociodemographic variables. The results provided further validation for the SASSI scales, supporting the utility of this instrument. We discuss diagnostic and treatment implications and suggest directions for further research.

摘要:
The current study examined whether adolescent body weight dissatisfaction, self-perception of body weight, perceived physical attractiveness, and body msas related to the use of alcohol and illicit drugs in a sample of 1,915 adolescents. Generally adolescents who were dissatisfied with their weight and considered themselves as unattractive used illicit substances, drank alochol, and got drunk more often than those who were satisfied with their weight and considered themselves as attractive or average-looking. Underweight adolescents also used illicit drugs and alcohol more frequently than overweight and normal-weight adolescents. The results of this study may suggest that health promotion strategies which focus upon enhancing adolescent perceptions of body weight and attractiveness may provide an important potential pathway for reducing substance use.

摘要:
A case study of substance abuse prevention asset (resiliency) assessment of a Puerto Rican community in New England demonstrates the importance of this approach towards the development of collaborative services between natural support systems and formal human service organizations. A series of recommendations will be provided to help substance abuse-related programs based in communities.

摘要:
This article describes preferred places of drinking and ways of obtaining alcohol beverages by 1,480 jewish, Moslem, Christian and Druze adolescent drinkers from 29 schools in 13 locations in the north of Israel in winter 1994. The pub is the primary source of alcohol for Jewish adolescents, whereas the home is the main alcohol source for non-Jewish teenagers. Most Jew and Druze teenagers obtain alcohol by themselves. Most Moslems get their drinks from same-age friends. Most Christians get alcohol from their parents. This article presents gender and grade differences, sa well as cultural-oriented suggestions for preventive initiatives.
