摘要:
In recent years, student assistance programs have become the model approach to early intervention in adolescent substance abuse. Despite their widespread adoption in the nation's schools, an assertions of program success, there is little substantiation of their effectiveness. The paper reviews the available research on student assistance programs and provides information from the evaluation of a multi-school program in Washington state. It finds that students who participate in student assistance programs generally show improvements, especially in regard to levels of substance abuse, but there is insufficient evidence to judge the program superior to other approaches. There is need for continued program development and more research.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to compare indices of behavioral, emotional, and psychological problems of maltreated and non-maltreated adolescents in a drug treatment program. Data were collected over a seven year period from intake interviews and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scores of 522 adolescent patients at a drug treatment program. Maltreatment was self-reported by 43% of the females and 17% of the males. Results indicated that females had significantly more emotional and psychological problems than did males and that maltreated females had significantly higher levels of problems in these areas than any other group. Both maltreated males and females had significantly higher levels of behavioral problems than did their non-maltreated peers. The unique needs of maltreated adolescents in drug treatment programs are discussed.

摘要:
Individual differences among substances abusing adolescents should be taken into account when developing a tailored treatment plan. Specifically, whether or not the youth has been diagnosed with an Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may influence the youth's experience in treatment. Subjects were 30 ADHD and 30 non-ADHD previously discharged white male clients selected from an adolescent residential substance abuse treatment program. In particular, it was hypothesized that ADHD clients would have significantly different and less desirable treatment outcomes, as well as shorter lengths of stay. Data were collected by sequentially reviewing file records of previously discharged clients. Data did not support the first hypothesis, but a significant difference was observed in terms of actual length of stay in residential treatment. Implications for possible treatment needs of ADHD clients and future research are discussed.

摘要:
Screening data, including information obtained from the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services Detention Risk Assessment Instrument and the Problem Oriented Screening Instrument for Teenagers developed by NIDA, on arrested youths processed at the Hillsborough County, Florida Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) in November 1993 are analyzed. The results provide support for the effectiveness of the Detention Risk Assessment Instrument in differentiating among youths released to the community unsupervised, youths placed on home detention and those placed in secure detention. Youths placed in secure detnetion evidence the highest rates of problems in regard to self-reported marijuana and alcohol use in the past year, and experiencing potential problems in the areas of leisure and recreation and family relations. Unsupervised release youths evidence the lowest rates of problems in these domains, and youths placed on home detention reflect an intermediate rate of these problems. The service delivery and policy implications of these findings are drawn.
