摘要:
AbstractAn anonymous questionnaire on eating behavior and attitudes was administered to the student body of a coeducational private preparatory school. There were 424 males and 337 females, ranging in age from 13 to 19 years and representing 86.5% of the available student body, who completed the questionnaire. Results indicated a high frequency of concern with weight, body image, and dieting, particularly among women. In particular the female subjects reported high frequencies of binge eating, fasting, crash dieting, and feeling obese. A sizable number of women reported self‐induced vomiting and amenorrhea secondary to weight loss. These concerns and behaviors were more highly correlated with subjects' opinions about the desirability of their weight rather than with their reported body weight (prorated for height and age). There were 4.0% of women and 0.8% of men who answered questions that would meet strict DSM III criteria for bulimia. These results provide additional evidence that troubled eating behavior and attitudes towards weight and body image are widespread among adolescent wome

摘要:
AbstractUntil recently, eating disorders were rare among blacks in this country. A recent increase in referrals of black patients may herald an increase in the prevalence of the disorders among this population. The author speculates that an interplay of biological and sociocultural factors could best account for this increased prevalence.

摘要:
AbstractThe problem of bulimia in adolescents has been increasingly noticed, although literature on its treatment is sparse. In this paper the authors share experiences gained through the implementation of an adjunctive group therapy treatment for bulimic adolescent females. Specific observations pertaining to the personality and psychopathology of group members and its impact on group process are detailed.

摘要:
AbstractThe incidence of eating disorders has been highest among Caucasian American women of middle to upper middle social classes. Observations of anorexia nervosa and bulimia in two Eastern European immigrants to the United States are described. These cases illustrate the influence of immigration and acculturation on the adolescent and highlight their particular vulnerability to acculturation pressures of the new society. The case studies illustrate the complex interaction of individual, familial, and sociocultural factors associated with the development of anorexia nervosa and bulimia in a population not previously considered to be at risk. Consideration is given to the potential susceptibility of female immigrants in the United States to the pervasive messages emphasizing slimness and attractiveness as vehicles to acceptance and success in American culture.

摘要:
AbstractRobert Whytt's contributions to the field of eating disorders have fallen into obscurity since his death in 1766. In his text, Observations on the Nature, Causes, and Cure of those Disorders which have been Commonly called Nervous, Hypochondriac or Hysteric to which are prefixed some Remarks on the Sympathy of the Nerves, Whytt made seminal comments about both anorexia nervosa and bulimia. This essay contains a biographical sketch, quotations from his publication, and a commentary.
