摘要:
AbstractThe first section of this paper presents a clinical picture of the bulimic based upon descriptive research on this eating disorder. Assessment techniques, primarily a group of recently developed questionnaires, are then briefly discussed. Tables are included to summarize descriptive clinical research and information on the various assessment instruments. The remainder of the paper presents and evaluates proposed etiologies and treatment approaches for bulimia. Strengths and weaknesses in the current DSM‐III definitional criteria for bulimia are pointed out. The importance of considering possible subgroups of bulimics and the relationship between anorexia nervosa and bulimia in future research are emphasize

摘要:
AbstractAnorexia nervosa is a complex of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes occurring in individuals who starve themselves because of an aversion to weight gain. Bulimia involves episodic binge eating, combined with an awareness that the eating pattern is abnormal.Theorists suggest that individuals with anorexia nervosa can be seen as rejecting the traditional female role, while individuals with bulimia can be seen as overidentifying with the traditional female role. The validated Sex Role Ideology Scale by Kalin and Tilby was used to determine if anorexics did in fact have a feminist perspective on women's role in society, and if bulimics had a traditional perspective.Data from the two patient groups (anorexics and bulimics) were compared to those of a control group of university students, matched for sex and age. No significant differences were found on the Sex Role Ideology Scale.

摘要:
AbstractA confidential questionnaire, covering the DSM‐III criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia, was administered to three samples of students, totalling 1060 individuals, at two colleges and a secondary school. Although none of the male respondents met DSM‐III criteria for either disorder, 1.0% to 4.2% of women met DSM‐III criteria for a history of anorexia nervosa (with or without a history of bulimia), and an additional 6.5% to 18.6% met DSM‐III criteria for a history of bulimia alone. Even when allowance is made for the number of nonrespondents, possible falsepositive questionnaire responses, and the limitations of the DSM‐III criteria themselves, the prevalence rates appear substantial. Taking into account the mean ages of various samples, our results agree closely with two previous studies that each examined a single sample of students. These results augment the growing evidence that the eating disorders represent a serious public healt

摘要:
AbstractThis study examined the prevalence of bulimia and frequent binge eating in female college students. Additionally, sex differences in binge eating and in labeling one's behavior as binge eating were assessed. All students in an introductory psychology course, 485 women and 327 men, were subjects. Of all students, 49% reported binge eating. Significantly more women than men reported binge eating and labeled their behavior as such. While 56% of the women reported binge eating, only 7.2% reported eight or more episodes per month. Approximately 4% of the women sampled fulfilled operationalized DSM‐III criteria for bulimi

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of the present study was to compare overweight and nonover‐ weight girls on each of three dimensions of self‐control: ability to delay gratification, behavioral strategies used to delay gratification, and preference for delay of gratification. Subjects were 36 middle‐class girls, 5 to 9 years of age. Half the sample was overweight according to height/weight norms adjusted for age and the judgment of trained observers; half the subjects were normal weight according to the same indicators. Subjects were assigned to one of two reward conditions—food or nonfood—and tested on ability to delay. Subjects were videotaped during the delay period and delay behaviors were analyzed. The preference for small immediate versus larger delayed rewards was assessed by questionnaire. Results indicated that overweight and normal‐weight girls did not differ in their ability to delay gratification or in preference for delayed rewards. However, overweight girls employed less effective self‐control strategies than did control subjects. This finding is discussed in terms of implications for development and treatme

摘要:
AbstractIt is widely held by clinicians that anorexia nervosa patients display a compliant, inhibited, highly conformist ego structure. This hypothesis was tested by the administration of the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT), a psychometric measure of ego development, to 29 anorexic inpatients. Surprisingly, the results of the WUSCT did not support the hypothesis: The majority of patients demonstrated ego level development beyond the conformist category. There was a trend for higher body weight at admission to be associated with higher levels of ego development, but the correlation was not statistically significant. Clinical and research implications of the findings are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractMuch controversy surrounds the issue of sex role identity in anorexia nervosa. In this study 16 inpatient and 13 nonhospitalized anorectic women were compared with each other on the Bem Sex Role Inventory and with two non‐eating‐disordered control groups of women, one consisting of 16 undergraduate students and the other of 16 students pursuing graduate degrees in social work. No significant differences in scores were found between the two groups of anorectic subjects, and both control group scores also showed no significant differences. However, while femininity item scores were similar in all four groups, both groups of anorectic subjects scored significantly lower on the masculinity items than both control groups. No significant correlations were found in the anorectic subjects between masculinity item score and percentage of ideal body weight, duration of illness, or extent of education. An interpretation of anorexia nervosa as primarily a rejection or a caricature of the feminine role is challenged by this study. Rather, the results suggest that one characteristic of those women vulnerable to developing this syndrome may be a failure to develop adequately those “masculine” traits that are also necessary for optimal adult female functioning in contemporary
