摘要:
AbstractTwelve male subjects with anorexia nervosa have been studied in respect of various aspects of their hormonal status. Initially low plasma levels of testosterone and LH increase significantly as weight is regained to matched population mean levels. LH response to releasing hormone is absent at low body weight, enhanced at transitional early/mid‐pubertal body weight and normal at newly restored adult body weight. It is claimed that these changes as experienced by the individuals concerned during weight gain must necessarily be taken into account in the attendant psychotherapy, and can then provide the opportunity for psychological growth and greater capacity this time to cope with the inevitably rekindied adolescent turmoi

摘要:
AbstractThe psychosexual histories of 28 female patients suffering from anorexia nervosa were studied in the context of the eating disturbance. The histories revealed a wide spectrum of sexual activity and experience, but 4 fairly distinct groups could be discrned. Group 1 patients denied their sexuality, group 2 had slow psychosexual development and were lacking in confidence, group 3 were experienced but passive in their sexuality and group 4 were sexually active and assertive. There appeared to be an association between inclusion in these groups and certain clinical variables such as severity of emaciation, occurrence of bulimia and type of weight losing behaviour employed e. g. vomiting and purging as opposed to abstinence. Personality characteristics also influenced assignment to particular groups. In some patients, periods of weight loss appeared to provide a moratorium in respect to sexual challenges, while in others, the recurrence of disturbed patterns of eating were related directly to times of increased sexual activity.

摘要:
AbstractThe task of this paper is to examine the interplay between socio‐cultural forces and personality, specifically psychopathology, as a way of explaining the increase in contemporary women suffering from eating disorders. Several questions are raised regarding the cultural preoccupation with thinness, the apparent increase in anorexia nervosa and related eating disorders, and whether the current theories of etiology of eating disorders are adequate in explaining the increase in this phenomena. Finally, an integrative psychosocial model is propose

摘要:
AbstractThirty‐one adolescents were assigned to either a parent participation or a no‐parent participation group. All adolescents attended weekly classes to learn weight loss and self‐management skills via videotape, role play, and group discussion. Monetary deposits were returned to adolescents when they achieved weight loss goals. Parents of adolescents in the parent participation group met in classes to learn skills for helping their children lose weight. Monetary deposits were returned to parents for completion of weekly assignments. At postreatment, adolescents in the parent participation group showed the greatest decreases in percent above ideal weight. They maintained the reductions at a nine month follow‐up. Adolescents in the noparent group matched the parent participation groups' performance at follow‐up. Participants reported significant changes in dietary habits relevant to cardiovascular health. Significant relationships between changes in percent above ideal weight and physical activity and HDL were also

摘要:
AbstractMuch controversy has existed concerning the nosological category to which primary anorexia nervosa belongs. In this study 27 hospitalized anorexic and schizophrenic females at NIMH were compared on two commonly used psychodiagnostic measures, the Wechsler and Rorschach. Anorexics had higher IQ's than schizphrenics. Specifically, with the exception of similarities and vocabulary, anorexics showed a superiority on all subtests. On the other hand, anorexics, like schizophrenics, produced disturbed Rorshachs. The Delta Index means of the two groups were not statistically significant and clearly reflected pathological thought organization. However, on specific Rorschach dimensions, anorexics produced more shading, achromatic color and whole responses which suggests greater organizing abilities and awareness of affectional needs and depression.A unitary model of psychopathology is criticized for insufficient descriptive and differentiating power, and a model is presented that allows for the measuring of levels of psychopathology. Based on general test considerations (e. g. differential response to degree of structure) and specific test findings (e. g. shading and achromatic responses, whole responses, Delta Index), it is proposed that anorexics have a number of features in common with borderline personalities. These similarities include proclivity toward disturbed thought processes, sensitivity to depression and affective needs but cognitive organization on structured tests.
