摘要:
AbstractThe psychological status of fifteen morbidly obese patients was assessed prior to gastroplastic surgery for the purpose of weight reduction study. The patients, averaging 264% of their ideal weight, were predominantly in the lowest socioeconomic class. This sample may represent a subset of the morbidly obese who have a high degree of psychopathology, the most common manifestation of which is affective illness. The prevalence of lifetime depressive disorders in these patients was 53%, utilizing the diagnostic criteria of the DSM‐III. Only one patient had no diagnosable mental illness. The sex, percentage of ideal weight, and socioeconomic class of the patients may influence these finding

摘要:
AbstractA self‐report measure of bulimia, validated by interviews, was used to survey the eating habits of 689 college women. The results revealed (1) a continuous dimension of “problem eating” defined as weight concern, dieting, and binge eating; (2) high base rates of bulimic symptoms with 40% of women binge eating at least once a month; (3) ethnic differences, with Caucasian women scoring higher on “problem eating” than Asian‐American women; and (4) a range of 6‐14% of the Caucasian women with a diagnosis of bulimia. An additional measure of eating patterns was administered to 102 women. On the basis of the eating measures and degree of overweight, four groups of women were identified: Bulimic, Snacking Overweight, Non‐snacking Overweight, and Sensible Eaters. Eating habits of the four groups were compared. Bulimic symptoms are discussed in the context of normative eating habits amon

摘要:
AbstractOne hundred third year medical students completed a questionnaire which elicited their reactions to obesity, including morbid obesity. The students' reactions toward the moderately obese were neutral or negative; while their reactions to the morbidly obese were almost uniformly negative. This is in contrast to their reactions to persons of average weight, which were neutral or positive. The negative prejudices expressed toward the morbidly obese extended beyond characteristics attributed to weight. Their negative feelings towards the obese did not change after direct contact with morbidly obese patients. Further research is needed to assess how prejudicial views toward obese people affect their medical care.

摘要:
AbstractWe present a brief review of the literature on the use of art in the treatment of anorexia nervosa. We describe our treatment setting and present illustrative work of four patients with anorexia nervosa during their hospital treatment. Themes of disturbed self image, inner emptiness/loneliness, and concern over control and boundary competence emerge from the examples presented. In addition, defenses of denial and splitting are illustrated. We discuss some possible theoretical constructs which might explain the dynamic meaning of art therapy, as opposed to verbal therapies, in these patients. We also discuss our clinical impression that art can serve as an important bridge function for the anorectic in facilitating verbal psychotherapies. We feel that art therapy work adds an important dimension to the multimodality treatment needed in these patients.

摘要:
AbstractChildhood obesity remains a poorly understood condition which is difficult to modify. Most investigations and explanations of obesity adopt a biological, psychological, or sociological perspective, with little attention being paid to the family. The work that has been done in this area tends to be based on clinical impression rather than systematic enquiry, and to focus on the mother‐child relationship rather than on the family as a whole. This latter approach, where the family is the basic unit of study, has proved useful in our understanding and treatment of several disorders that can be compared to obesity. This paper argues that the relative absence of family studies constitutes a significant gap in our investigation of childhood obesity. Such studies need to be carried out, but they should also be part of a more holistic approach to the problem, which seeks to make links between the observations made at several different levels of enquir

摘要:
AbstractThe development and main issues of an ongoing group for spouses of patients with anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia are reported. The need of these individuals for information, and for sharing feelings of isolation, frustration, anger, and guilt are discussed. Other common themes discussed are those related to control of the eating behavior of the spouse, relationships with family members and children, and common personality characteristics of the wives. The therapist's perspective on the group and recommendations for future groups are presented. This group was found to provide a useful adjunct to the treatment of these patients.
