AbstractThe long term psychotherapeutic treatment of anorexia nervosa is discussed. Questions are raised ragarding how early disturbances among these patients can be recongnized, how anorexia nervosa patients express theur understanding of their mental attitude and behavior, and what they consider the reasons and causes behind it. A case study is used to illustrate these points.

AbstractThe mother‐infant feeding relationship was examined as it has been discussed in the literature through both a definition of the behavioral parameters involved in the feeding situation and a psychological explanation for the differences in these behaviors as they have been observed. Rather than to continue to isolate the psychoanalytic literature from the behavioral observations that have been made on infants and their mothers, the present review sought to explore the interplay between the two modes of thought. AbstractChildhood and teenage onset obese have been found to respond less favorably than their adult onset counterparts in treatment for weight reduction. In the present study of adult outpatient response to long term partial fasting, performance among childhood, teenage and adult onset groups was compared. All three onset groups staved in treatment an average of 22 weeks and lost approximately 62 pounds. However, teenage onset patients left treatment significantly more obese than adult onset patients. Teenage onset patients left treatment more obese than adult not because they performed less well but because they entered treatment more obese.

AbstractIn this paper we attempt to explore the unique meaning of the body for the bulimic patient. In contrast with Selvini‐Palazzlis's view of the body as a persecutory object in anorexia nervosa, we suggest that a more primitive meaning or function underlies the role of the body in bulimia. Specifically the body becomes a transitional object, a vehicle for the representing of the maternal object and then the repudiation of her.
