AbstractThis study examines the effect on bulimic symptomatology of short‐term group treatment using a combined cognitive‐behavioral and psychodynamic approach in 92 female subjects. Patterns of symptom change at the completion of a 12‐week group were studied. Changes in frequency of bingeing and vomiting pre‐ and posttest were measured by means of dependent correlatedt‐tests. AbstractConcerns about body shape are common among young women in Western cultures, and, in an extreme form, they constitute a central feature of the eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. To date there has been no satisfactory measure of such concerns. A self‐report instrument, the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) has therefore been developed. The items that constitute this measure were derived by conducting semistructured interviews with various groups of women including patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The BSQ has been administered to three samples of young women in the community as well as to a group of patients with bulimia nervosa. The concurrent and discriminant validity of the measure have been shown to be good. The BSQ provides a means of investigating the role of concerns about body shape in the development, maintenance, and treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervos

AbstractThe sense of personal ineffectiveness in eating disorders was investigated as a complex construct referring to various aspects of functioning rather than as the unidimensional trait assumed by prior studies. Eighteen patients and 18 controls were given a number of measures in order to test for ineffectiveness from several perspectives. The results indicated that patients with eating disorders experience a sense of ineffectiveness in many areas of their lives. Their more general attitudes about personal control appear to be dominated by their lack of control over their eating behaviour. However, these patients also exhibit distinct and specific difficulties in the areas of social effectiveness, personal independence, and self‐esteem. These findings support the notion that ineffectiveness in eating disorders is not a single attitudinal style but a complex construct referring to a range of behavior

AbstractThere has been a proliferation of epidemiological survey studies of weight reducing and eating behaviors in adolescents; however, the validity of these self‐report questionnaires has received little attention. The present study was designed to determine whether self‐report measures of efforts to lose or gain weight and use of specific weight control methods are consistent with other measures. There were 98 high school volunteers who completed a questionnaire about weight change efforts. Parallel versions of the questionnaire were also returned by a parent and a friend or sibling. There were 165 high school subjects who completed the questionnaire and also recorded food intake, exercise, and various weight control methods for 7 days. External raters agreed with subjects' reports that they were trying to lose weight, and weight losers consumed much less food according to their eating records. Self‐reported weight gainers consumed much more food than others, but agreement with external raters was lower. External raters agreed with subjects who reported skipping meals and exercising to lose weight, and the subjects exhibited these behaviors more frequently in their eating records. However, there was low consistency between the self‐report questionnaire and external measures of drastic weight control behaviors, such as vomiting and fasting. AbstractIn a patient suffering from severe bulimia nervosa, cognitive behavioral treatment was complicated by acute water intoxication. Fluid intake was investigated further in 21 patients fulfilling diagnostic criteria for bulimia nervosa. Results suggest that (1) high fluid intake is common, and (2) there is a high prevalence of self‐reported nonspecific symptoms that would be liable to mask water intoxication were it to occur. These and other factors suggest that it is in the nature of bulimia nervosa that relevant symptoms may be disregarded by both the patient and the therapist. AbstractHyperamylasemia, often with abdominal symptoms, commonly occurs in patients with bulimia as well as in pancreatitis. Eleven bulimic patients presenting with hyperamylasemia are described; one case is described in detail. Of the 11, the source of amylase in 10 was salivary, not pancreatic. A careful history with questions about weight changes, eating behavior, body image, methods of weight control and purging, as well as a complete mental status examination should be done on females presenting with the above symptoms. Doing this will prevent unncessary procedures, drug prescription, hospitalizations, and latrogenic illness.
