AbstractLavaka (Madagascar's abundant gullies) show a complex pattern of development. Fourteen independent measures of size and shape in 93 lavaka were investigated by principal components analysis and discriminant function analysis. Typical lavaka start either as wounds and raw patches on mid‐hillside that develop step‐like head scarps, or as toe slopes collapsed by seepage, slumping, or undercutting. They become deep, raw, vertical‐sided, teardrop‐ to heart‐shaped gashes that may be deepest and broadest uphill. As the walls retreat, slump, and become overgrown, lavaka become longer, broader, gentler, and partly filled concavities. They can grow to reach from the valley floor to the hill crest (or even beyond the crest) before healing over. AbstractA model has been built to simulate runoff and erosion on slopes of varying form with soil of varying hydraulic conductivity, porosity, storage capacity, and particle size distribution. The model is based on known physical laws and takes into account spatially dependent random variation in the initial conditions of the soil. The rainfall is similarly both random and autocorrelated in space.Detailed results show how runoff is generated as a result of slow conductivity and high water table, how this leads to erosion, the degradation of the land surface, the capture of flow lines, and the development of networks of rills. The last accords well with results from laboratory experiments. Changing the initial conditions produces results that accord with intuition and reality.

AbstractShort‐term instability in the behaviour of a small, meandering alluvial channel is identified from the relation between sinuosity and either floodplain slope or channel slope within 17 reaches along an 81‐kilometre section of the Belle Fourche River in western South Dakota. In reaches 1 to 4 and 11 to 17 the channel is relatively stable and sinuosity varies inversely with channel slope. In reaches 5 to 10, sinuosity is positively related to floodplain slope. Sinuosity increases markedly in reaches 5, 6, and 7 (which are immediately downstream from a discontinuity in the long profile of the floodplain) in association with an increase in floodplain slope. Immediately upstream from the discontinuity, bankfull channel depth and sinuosity decrease and the area of the floodplain reworked by meander migration between 1939 and 1981 increases, in association with a decrease in floodplain slope. Channel behaviour in reaches 5 to 10 is best explained as a consequence of neotectonic activity, as indicated by changes in elevation recorded along geodetic survey lines that cross lineaments that may delimit the eastern boundary of the Black Hills uplift. Sinuosity acts as a barometer of the effects of neotectonic activity on alluvial channels. AbstractThis paper briefly describes a model of the erosional development of catchments and their channel networks. The model differentiates between the dominant transport processes in hillslope and channels. The development of channels and hillslopes occurs in an integrated manner as a function of physically observable mechanisms. The growth of a river basin is qualitatively described.The model concepts are used to study the basin during periods of growth (transient periods), as well as during dynamic equilibrium. This leads to hypotheses about the relationship between slopes, relief, tectonic uplift, erodability, runoff, and catchment area.It is shown that the model leads to very reasonable and desirable behaviour of hillslopes during retreat and degradation.

AbstractIn contrast to much previous research on blanket peat moorland, which has concentrated upon studies of the form and causes of gully erosion, this paper attempts to investigate sediment transport and to estimate both short‐term and long‐term sediment yields in such terrain. The research was conducted on Wessenden Head Moor to the west of Huddersfield, Yorkshire, where automatic stream sampling continued over a period of two years. Use of corrected rating curves (Ferguson, 1988) provided a mean estimate of sediment yield over this period of 55 t km−2yr−1.In addition an estimate of longer‐term sediment yield was derived from four reservoir sediment surveys in the Wessenden Valley. Total yield was 203.69 t km−2yr−1, including an organic fraction of 38.82 t km−2yr−1. Stream sampling at three sites on Shiny Brook, including headwaters and the outflow to the reservoir, suggested that there is great temporal and spatial variability in mineral and organic inputs to the reservoirs. Although not excessive in gravimetric terms, the low density of peat means that there is a serious erosion problem. AbstractTwo approaches to modelling surface erosion are described which can be used to explain the development of geomorphological features. The first approach uses non‐linear wave theory and shows how surface gradient discontinuities can arise as the erosion of an initially smooth surface proceeds. For isotropic erosion, surface shapes may be predicted by a simple application of the Huyghens wavefront construction and Snell's law at media boundaries.
