AbstractThis paper derives the difference equation for nonlinear compartmental systems by means of the forward Euler method and compares the solution of the continuous‐time compartmental system with the solution of the system by the difference equation. That is, the objective of this paper is to derive the conditions under which the discretized system created by difference equation preserves the specific properties of the original continuous‐time compartmental systems (non‐negativity, monotony and non‐oscillatory properties of the solutions) and the admissible range of the step width in the difference equation. It shows that the uniformly bounded solutions with constant input can be approximated uniformly in [0, ∞) by the solutions of the difference equation with arbitrary small errors. AbstractA great part of the layout design of single‐layer printed wiring boards and hybrid IC's is still implemented manually, and hence of practical importance is the layout automation in this field.This paper describes an automatic routing system which can be applied to single‐layer printed wiring boards and hybrid IC's used for numerous analog appliances. This system is distinctive in that the routing process is implemented through a number of stages such that at each stage an interference relation for the from‐to's which remain to be interconnected is sought. Then according to the interference information thus obtained, a maximal set of wire patterns which do not intersect each other is generated. AbstractThis paper describes a digital processing method for modulation which consists of sampling rate matching and digital filtering. Processing in a digital modulation system consists of spectrum shifting, filtering and orthogonalization of signals, etc.Because of several sampling rates existing within a modulation system, matching of these sampling rates is vital. Depending on the variation of the sampling rate, the amplitude and higher harmonic distribution of the spectrum of the time‐sequence signal obtained by sampling vary. By utilizing higher harmonics produced by conversion for sampling rate matching, and filtering these harmonics by means of a digital filter, it is possible to shift the spectrum to any arbitrary frequency and orthogonalize the signals.It is shown that a modulation system can be constructed without carrier multiplications. AbstractThis paper presents a new, linear continuous predictor based on innovation theory using covariance information on data to be predicted as a statistical non‐physical model. Model simulation is performed to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed predictor. AbstractThe hairpin line circuit is one of the distributed coupling lines with special terminal conditions, and various design methods have been reported. However, because of the complexity in dealing with the terminal conditions, equivalent circuits for the hairpin line circuit are not easily derived unlike interdigital circuits. It is desired to establish a simple design method instead of using approximate theory from admittance matrices. In this paper, the equivalent circuit is derived from multiport admittance matrices with the terminal conditions taken into account and its properties are clarified. From these results, the design method is developed under given circuit specification. In this method, the circuit analysis and design are made by matrix calculation and are suitable for computer calculation.

AbstractPreviously, the author reported the theory of the solid‐state mutual coupling cable (hereafter, called SSMCC) which utilizes active coupling among three conductors to compensate the cable losses. In this paper, the optimum design theory of the SSMCC is presented with consideration of the realization condition. The design procedure is described for given transistor characteristics and cable conductor resistances. The design example of an experimental SSMCC and its transfer characteristics are presented. AbstractMost of the optimization methods for the design of switching networks aim at optimizing the efficiency of the switch, while paying very little attention to the complexity of the central procedure. It is possible to attain an extremely high switching efficiency in a PCM switching network at the expense of an increased number of steps in path hunting. Since the complexity and the number of steps in path hunting increase with the amount of traffic load, conventional method for the evaluation of path hunting procedures becomes inadequate. This paper describes and evaluates a relatively complex but efficient path hunting procedure. Using this procedure, high switching efficiency can be achieved without a significant increase in the number of hunting steps. AbstractA broadband polarizer with metal posts is designed on the basis of the fact that normalized capacitive susceptance of short posts decreases at high frequencies. To obtain the design data, the measurement is made for the optimum post diameter and its length which give negative normalized capacitive susceptance, and the magnitude of the post susceptance for the orthogonal two polarized waves. A method of determining the post size for a broadband polarizer is examined from the equivalent circuit. To obtain good VSWR characteristics, the post susceptance in the matching sections follows the raised cosine distribution. The relation between the number of posts and VSWR is clarified. An experimental polarizer has an ellipticity less than 0.25 dB in the specific broadband 12.6%.

AbstractRadar detection of an airplane flying near the ground is not possible. To solve this problem, we analyze electromagnetic wave scattering by a conducting cylinder located near the conducting plane. The backward and omnidirectional scattering patterns and field distributions (E and H wave) near the cylinder are derived for the plane wave incidence. A similar analysis is made for a cylindrical wave. The theory is confirmed by a model experiment using a linear current source at 9.6 GHz.

AbstractThis paper reports the design and characteristics of the 256‐bit elastic store (ES) CMOS LSI. The elastic store circuit absorbs phase differences of signals and is one kind of First‐In‐First‐Out (FIFO) Read/Write memory with the function of application to multiplex. The circuit is equipped with an elastic function which can perform write and read of the data independently and other functions such as reset and inhibit of the address counter and phase comparator. As CMOS circuits, NAND gate at store cell and D‐F/F with reset terminals at address counter are used to obtain stabilization, high‐speed operation and low‐power consumption. As the result of a prototype LSI, a performance at more than 9 MHz under the worst condition of VDD= 4.75 V and Ta = 70°C and the characteristics of high speed and low power consumption of 125 mW have been obtained.
