AbstractThis paper proposes recursive and non‐recursive multiple filters, as a method to realize efficiently a bank of FIR filters on a finite ring. Both types are essentially the application of the isomorphism of the integer residue ring based on the Chinese remainder theorem. For the recursive multiple filter, a bank of filters is realized based on the transfer function defined by z‐transform on the recently introduced complex integer residue ring. Under the isomorphism of the residue ring, the equivalent single filter to the filter bank is realized. For the nonrecursive multiple filter, the number‐theoretic transform on the complex integer residue ring is used to realize the filter based on the equivalence similar to the recursive case. This paper emphasizes the recussive multiple filter. The integer of the form 2n‐1 is proposed as the modulus for the residue operation to be used in the design. AbstractWhen mutually correlated data are observed at two different places, it may happen that data are compressed independently, losing the correlational information as a whole. Such cases are observed frequently in economical and environmental data. When the compressed data (statistics) are combined to perform a statistical inference concerning the probability structure governing the two observations, the loss of the statistical information due to the independent data compression should be noted. In other words, a problem arises of estimating Fisher information lost by the independent data compression in the sense of Shannon information at the two sites. It is another problem to determine the best ways of data compression and estimation. This paper introduced anew the notion of mutual Fisher information, and answers those questions by a new theory, combining the information and the statistical theories. The usefulness of the information geometry, which works on the geometrical structure of the probability space, is also indicated through the discussion.

AbstractTo apply grating reflectors to surface acoustic wave resonators, it is necessary to have knowledge about the reflection characteristics as a function of the grating parameters. This paper discusses the reflection of the surface acoustic wave by the grating composed of periodic metal‐strips on a piezoelectric substrate. The surface wave incident upon the grating is reflected by electrical and mechanical surface perturbations due to the strips. The reflection characteristics are analyzed by the perturbation theory and the coupled mode theory, considering the two perturbations. By numerical calculation, it is shown that the manner of superposition of the two perturbations depends on the material of the substrate, the cut‐angle and the strip material. For LiNbO3, LiTaO3and quartz substrates, the calculated value is compared with the experimental values reported elsewhere indicating good agreem

AbstractThis paper presents an accurate analysis for theΔv/vsurface acoustic waveguide, which is generally applicable to the anisotropic substrate. This is a three‐dimensional boundary‐value problem in the anisotropic semiinfinite piezeoelectric medium, and includes a number of difficult points for analysis. There are two contradictory requirements for the analysis: (1) flexibility in the object of analysis; and (2) a simple program for numerical computation and small computational complexity. There has not been presented a method which satisfies both these requirements. The method presented in this paper is highly practical, providing a reasonable compromise between the two. The method is as follows. The boundary condition on the substrate surface of the guide is replaced by an integral equation using Green's function. The resulting equation is converted into a matrix equation by partitioning the boundary into elements for discrete representation. Then the eigenfrequency of the guide is determined by solving the equation numerically. The usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated by the result of numerical calculation for the dispersion characteristics and the field distribution of the guided

AbstractThis paper considers the non‐preemptive priority queue problem, where the server in a station participates in a walking process. When the server arrives at the station, he/she processes the job with the highest priority at that time and begins the walking process. The jobs arrive with the external priorityrand with Poisson distribution. If two or more jobs have the same priority, they are processed on a first‐come first‐served basis. The processing time and the walking time of the server follow general distributions. Starting from the generating function and the normalizing condition for the number of jobs at the arrival of the server, the state probability for the number of jobs at that moment is derived. Next, the jobs are considered and partitioned into two classes (priority jobs and ordinary jobs), and the following functions are derived: (i) generating function for the number of priority jobs at the arrival of the server; (ii) generating function for the number of priority jobs at the end of service by the server; and (iii) generating function for the number of priority jobs at the completion of the priority job. From these generating functions, the waiting time distribution and the mean waiting time are derived for each class of priority. Numerical examples are

AbstractThis paper considers two queueing systems with the server's walking process, where the service of the job is composed of more than one serial process. The first system is the scheme where the server arriving at the station serves in the last service stage for a job. The second system is the scheme where the server arriving at the station can serve more than one service‐stage from the last to the first stage in the reverse order. When a job goes through a service at a certain stage, either it proceeds to the next service stage or leaves the system, following a specified probability. For both systems, the case of three serial stages in the stationary state is considered where the service time and the walking time follow general distributions. For the first system, the generating function for the number of jobs at the arrival of the server, the generating functions for the number of jobs at the departure of the job, queue waiting time and the stationary‐state condition are derived. AbstractA wave digital filter (WDF) is a low‐sensitivity digital filter which simulates lossless analog circuits. A lattice‐type digital filter (AR lattice filter), which is used in digital signal processing, is a WDF equivalent to a cascade of unit elements (u.e.). As the generalization of this relation, a WDF realizing a modeling filter for an ARMA process has been obtained and the network theory with WDF's has been applied to the digital signal processing. The conventional WDF's, except for the AR lattice filter, are constructed by using the transfer functions to be realized. In this paper, unlike the conventional network synthesis, we propose a synthesis method. In this method, a network approximating a modeling filter for a stationary stochastic process is synthesized recursively using a finite number of data of the autocorrelation coefficients (second‐order information) and the impulse response of the modeling filter (first‐order information). A lattice‐type digital filter is derived realizing an approximation of the transfer function. The approximation is one in which first‐ and second‐order information matches the forementioned data. Also, modified least square approximations due to Kalman and Mullis can be realized by this lattice‐type digital filter. AbstractThis paper analyzes a loss system with finite sources. The idle period of a source forms a renewal process and each customer requires several channels simultaneously. The service time of customers which require the same number of channels exhibit a general independent identical distribution. This is a general traffic model for a subscriber concentration stage in a high‐speed wide‐band communication network. The distributions of the numbers of customers in the system at arbitrary and customer arrival epochs are derived using the supplementary variable technique, where the backward recurrence‐time of call idle period and holding time are chosen as supplementary variables. It is shown that these distributions are determined only by the mean service time and the mean idle period of a source, irrespective of their distributions (robustness). Finally, some traffic characteristics, such as loss probability and circuit occupancy, are evaluated numerically for two‐traffic models and unbalanced input traffic

AbstractAn analysis of the BER performance of sequential decoding with stack algorithm is presented for rate 1/2 code. A tight upper bound of BER performance for maximum likelihood decoding is calculated by specific code distance profiles for evaluating the proto error probability of the simulation results. Block error probability is also considered through the random coding theory so that the simulation results satisfy its upper bound. Finally, the coding gain achievable by the sequential decoder is presented for given constraint length of the code and the memory capacity in the decoder, which will be useful for the hardware design.

AbstractIn the interactive information retrieval system using images with wide areas such as aerial photographs, in general, it is difficult to display the entire image with a sufficient resolution because of the limited number of pixels that can be displayed by the device. Consequently, it is desirable in such a system that an arbitrary subarea of the image can be retrieved and displayed with a high speed. From such a viewpoint, this paper proposes and discusses the hierarchical component separation coding. In the proposed method, the image information is separated into two components such as the gray level and the resolution components in the block truncation code, and the two components are coded hierarchically in regard to the resolution from rough to detailed levels. By this scheme, an arbitrary part of the image can be retrieved and displayed with the specified resolution. An experiment was made by computer simulation, wherein the block truncation code is applied to the proposed code. It is shown that hierarchical representation of the image in regard to the resolution as well as the code compression of one‐half to four‐fifths can be realized. It is shown also, by applying the proposed coding to the actual image retrieval system that, the code complexity in terminal transmission for the retrieval of the object image can be reduced from one‐fifth to one‐half the traditional method, leading to a high‐speed retrieval an
