摘要:
A brief review of a band transport model for the photorefractive effect is given. Distinction is made between the influence of intrinsic material dependent parameters and externally controlled parameters on the form of the optical nonlinearity. These considerations are made in the context of dynamic holographic optical processing applications. Examples of adaptive optical and Fourier-plane image processing using four-wave mixing in photorefractive bismuth silicon oxide crystals are discussed. Critical assessment is then made of the use of photorefractive materials in image cross-correlation schemes.

摘要:
Soluble polydiacetylenes are used as a nonlinear medium for picosecond degenerate four-wave mixing. Thermally induced refractive-index changes and a large ultrafast Kerr effect are experimentally observed and analysed theoretically.

摘要:
The photochromic properties of a class of fatigue-free thermally stable fulgide derivatives are outlined, and their applicability as optically addressed spatial-light modulators is discussed with reference to the requirements for coherent linear optical processing.

摘要:
Intermodulation occurring in a guided wave acousto-optic spectrum analyser device has been observed experimentally for the case of two input signals of equal strength. Limited agreement with the existing theoretical model has been obtained and possible reasons for this are considered. Recommendations are made for more wide ranging experimental investigations and areas identified where additional analysis would be useful. Taken together these will enable the limitations of practical large bandwidth devices to be properly assessed.
