摘要:
A FEW YEARS AGO there would have been little need to distinguish between the two halves of my title: John H. Van Vleck and magnetism, as a field of theoretical physics, were practically synonymous. Now the field has expanded so much that no one man can overwhelm all of its branches in the way Van did when my generation was being introduced to it. While I can safely assume that all physicists know some parts of Van's career in magnetism, I suspect few appreciate the whole of it.

摘要:
ON 10 OCTOBER Cornell University and the National Science Foundation will join in the dedication of the Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory and its associated facilities. This laboratory houses the 10‐GeV election synchrotron, the fourth in a series of electron accelerators built and used by physicists at Cornell under the inspiration and leadership of Robert R. Wilson for whom the new laboratory is named. The new machine was conceived in August 1962; in March 1965, after two and a half years of design study and finance negotiations, a construction contract was signed. Two years later a beam circulated in the machine and in March 1968 we obtained full energy of 10 GeV. This is the highest energy yet attained in any electron synchrotron. The experimental‐physics program utilizing the accelerator started in November 1967, at which time the synchrotron was already operating at an energy of 7 GeV.

摘要:
THE ORION PROJECT, with which I was involved about 10 years ago, aimed to build space ships powered by nuclear explosions. We began work on Orion after the Russian Sputnik went up and before the US was committed to a big space program with chemical propulsion. We felt then that there was a reasonable chance that the US could jump directly into nuclear propulsion and avoid building enormous chemical rockets like Saturn V. Our plan was to send ships to Mars and Venus by 1968, at a cost that would have been only a fraction of what is now spent on the Apollo program. We never got the green light; so nobody can be sure if our schemes were sound. I am not against the Apollo program; I much prefer it to no program at all. Still, I believe that fundamentally a Saturn V bears the same relation to an Orion ship as the majestic airships of the 1930's bore to the Boeing 707. The airships were huge, flimsy, with a payload absurdly small in comparison to their size, just like the Apollo ships.

摘要:
IN1931ENRICO FERMIorganized a small meeting to deal with the new, small field of nuclear physics. The handful of active and generally young physicists who were invited each reviewed a different aspect of nuclear physics. They spent the rest of this status‐discussion meeting in informal discussions, accentuated by excursions.

摘要:
THE DEUTSCHES MUSEUMin Munich is probably the best scientific and technical museum in the world. In any event, says its scientific director, it is the largest. With its busy and interesting halls of exhibits, it probably introduces more nonscientists and nonphysicists, especially young ones, to science and physics than any other institution.

摘要:
The world's largest particle accelerator, the 76‐GeV synchrotron at Serpukhov, is now producing2×1011protons/pulse and is expected to be doing experiments shortly. Groups from CERN and France are collaborating with Serpukhov scientists, and there is some hope for American participation, too. (Such international coo¨peration may, of course, be influenced by the Czechoslovakian situation.)
