摘要:
An experiment at the University of California at La Jolla, based on the propagation of fourth sound, appears to provide the first really direct evidence for superfluidity inHe3.Over the past two years (PHYSICS TODAY, October 1972, page 17 and July 1973, page 17), a variety of experiments have studied the curious behavior ofHe3below a few millidegrees Kelvin, where it undergoes two transitions, both in the liquid—“A” near 2.6 mK and “B” near 2.0 mK (at a melting pressure near 34.4 bar). These experiments measured various properties characteristic of a superfluid, ranging from nuclear magnetic resonance to viscosity.

摘要:
Earthquake prediction has become a major focus of geophysics in the People's Republic of China. Bruce A. Bolt (University of California, Berkeley), reporting on his recent visit as a guest lecturer of the Academia Sinica, observed the revival of geophysical research that has taken place since the Cultural Revolution and its possible contribution to the world research effort in seismology.

摘要:
The early 1970's have been important years of change for the physics and astronomy community. Data from the 1973 APS–AIP Register of Physicists and Related Scientists are now being analyzed and will allow us to catch a glimpse of these changes. Our initial analysis of the information reveals that unemployment, which had been dramatically increasing into 1971, has since dropped considerably although not to levels of the mid‐1960's. Despite the tight employment market, salaries have continued to increase with the largest increases noted for physicists employed by the government.

摘要:
Albert Abraham Michelson was the first American scientist to win the Nobel Prize, and his career is one of the most fascinating in the entire history of physics. His earliest work was firmly based on the classical physics of geometrical optics—in a precise determination of the velocity of light by an improved Foucault method. But then he mastered wave optics and invented his interferometer, and from that point on he proceeded to dazzle the scientific world with a display of the applications he found for his invention during a career that exhibited throughout a unique pattern of originality and dedication to physics.

摘要:
For the first time in over thirty years the Optical Society of America and the American Physical Society will meet together in Washington this month (21–25 April). The unusual nature of the meeting is reflected in a varied array of sessions and activities—among them, the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the APS, special tutorial/review seminars in optics, the first Physics/Optics Show, a tour of the National Bureau of Standards facilities in Gaithersburg. Maryland, a Skylab Symposium featuring Owen Garriott of the Skylab II crew, and of course large numbers of invited and contributed papers.
