摘要:
LANDE:Concerning “the historical origin of the dualistic interpretation” which I “have not realized:” I know of course of Einstein's light quanta in opposition to light waves. But I also know that there is a unitary quantum theory of radiation that has relegated the “photon” to the role of a quantum number attached to the periodic components of the continuous Maxwell field; thereby it has become unnecessary to attribute variousad hocinvented quantities—spin, interdependence of electric and magnetic properties of the photon—in order to save a particle picture dual to the wave picture of light. Light waves are real, matter waves are imaginary, in more than one sense.

摘要:
New determinations ofg−2,the anomalous magnetic moment, for the muon and electron show small departures from their theoretically predicted values. The muon value, reported by Francis Farley (Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, UK) at the Washington APS meeting, is higher than theory. The electron value is lower, according to Arthur Rich of the University of Michigan who recently recalculated (Phys. Rev. Letters20, 967, 1968)g−2using the data of David T. Wilkinson and H. Richard Crane (Phys. Rev.130, 852, 1963). New experiments to measure the electiong‐factor anomaly are being done by Rich and by Larry Knight of Stanford University and by G. Gra¨ff at the Physics Institute of the University, Bonn.

摘要:
The Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratory of the University of Manchester, better known as Jodrell Bank, achieved popular fame by tracking Russian and American space probes and satellites, culminating in the reception of the first television pictures of the moon's surface. 98&percent; of the observatory's operating time has, however, been spent on radio astronomy. Quasars and radio galaxies, and recently pulsars, have made more interesting quarry than rockets and satellites.PHYSICS TODAYrecently visited the site, where, under the guidance of John Davies and Gerhard de Jager we learned about the facilities and the current research programs.
