摘要:
When he gaveled the House Committee on Science to order in mid‐February to listen to Bush administration officials testify about the proposed fiscal year 2007 science budget, Representative Sherwood Boehlert (R‐NY) began by saying, “It's a rare thing to think of a budget hearing as a time of celebration, but I think that that's how we should view this morning's proceedings.” With a budget that proposes big increases for three science research agencies—the Department of Energy's Office of Science, NSF, and NIST—those advocating more spending on basic research were indeed celebrating.

摘要:
It is trite to regard turbulence as the last unsolved problem in classical physics and to cite many books and authorities to justify the opinion. It is likewise a cliche´ to list great physicists and mathematicians, such as Werner Heisenberg, Richard Feynman, and Andrei Kolmogorov, who “failed” to solve the problem despite much effort. Horace Lamb and others have been credited with wishing to seek heavenly wisdom on the subject when they arrived in heaven. With such lists and stories, youngsters are cautioned, directly and indirectly, that turbulence is beyond reasonable grasp.

摘要:
In the summer of 1914, Erskine Williamson, a 28‐year‐old Scottish mathematical physicist, joined a new laboratory in Washington, DC. Although he had been hired as a research assistant in geology, he began to attack a broad range of problems in physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and heat flow. His efforts soon extended to high‐pressure geophysics, culminating with his derivation of the pressure‐density relation for Earth's interior and the procedure for determining the pressures and densities as a function of depth in the planet. Though his equation is well known as one of the fundamental relations in geophysics, few are familiar with its discoverer, the breadth of his research, and the background behind its development. Williamson died unexpectedly in 1923 at the peak of his productivity, but during his short career he helped lay the foundations for the modern study of planetary interiors.

摘要:
Albert Einstein liked coming to Leiden, the Dutch city particularly known for its venerable university. Vienna‐born theoretical physicist Paul Ehrenfest, professor at Leiden University since 1912, was one of his closest friends.
