摘要:
Current activity and future prospects in the field of high‐energy or elementary‐particle physics have been the subject of a review by a panel set up by the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission and the President's Science Advisory Committee. The panel made its study during the past winter and issued a report with recommendations at the end of April.

摘要:
The scientific community's reactions to the policies followed by Federal agencies in the administration of grants and contracts in support of fundamental research are being reviewed by the National Academy of Sciences. The study will be conducted by the Academy's Committee on Science and Public Policy, and its major objective will be to recommend a set of broad policies and principles that will both “safeguard the fiscal responsibilities of Federal agencies and preserve a favorable environment for the conduct of scientific work”.

摘要:
Plans for setting up an international center for theoretical physics at Trieste early in 1964 have been announced by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The proposed center has been under discussion by the IAEA General Conference and its Board of Governors since September 1960, and a series of studies were made with the help of theoretical physicists from many countries. The Italian government has offered to construct a new building and housing facilities, to provide staff services and fellowships, and to contribute $250 000 annually for five years. The IAEA will provide fellowships and professorships up to an annual value of $55 000 for four years and make additional contributions up to $110 000 in the same period. It was decided to establish the facility on a provisional basis and to evaluate its work after two years to determine the direction of future activity. A further review would be undertaken after four years to determine if it would be desirable to move the center to a developing country.

摘要:
Bernard F. Burke of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C. has been named to receive the 1963 Helen B. Warner Prize of the American Astronomical Society. The award honors Dr. Burke's contributions to radio astronomy, especially the discovery of radio emission from the planet Jupiter, and will be presented to him at the Society's December meeting in Washington. Dr. Burke received a doctorate in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953 and in the same year joined the staff of the Carnegie Institution. In 1961 he was appointed to his present post of chairman of the Radio Astronomy Section in the Carnegie Institution's Department of Terrestrial Magnetism. During 1958–61, he served on the National Radio Astronomy Observatory Advisory Committee, and for the last three years has been a member of the National Science Foundation Astronomy Panel. Dr. Burke is a member of the American Physical Society, the AAS, and the Royal Astronomical Society.

摘要:
During its honors meeting in Washington, D.C. last spring, the American Geophysical Union awarded Merle A. Tuve its 25th William Bowie Medal for outstanding contributions and unselfish cooperation in geophysical research. Dr. Tuve has been a staff member of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution for over thirty‐five years and since 1946 has served as the Department's director. During World War II, he was attached to the Office of Scientific Research and Development and was awarded a Presidential Medal of Merit for his work in developing the proximity fuse. His present research activities include seismic‐data analysis of the earth's crust, development of image tubes for large telescopes, and studies of hydrogen gas clouds by radio‐astronomy techniques. In addition to his long service with the Carnegie Institution, Dr. Tuve has been a member of the US National Commission for UNESCO, the Board of Scientific Consultants of the Sloan Kettering Institute, and, since 1960, chairman of the Geophysics Research Board. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Geophysical Union.
