摘要:
Becquerels, curies, grays, rads, rems, roentgens, sieverts—even for specialists the units of radiation can get confusing. That's why two eminent physicists, Georges Charpak of France, winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics, and Richard Garwin, an architect of the US hydrogen bomb and an outspoken advocate of arms control, are proposing the DARI as a unit of radiation dose they hope will help the public evaluate the risks associated with low‐level radiation exposures.

摘要:
Nevada's newest special‐interest license plate depicts an atom, Einstein's equationE = mc2,and the mushroom cloud from an atomic blast. Profits from sales of the plates, which cost $61 for two, will go toward preserving the history of Nevada's nuclear test site.

摘要:
Enrico Fermi was extraordinary. He was the first internationally known Italian physicist since Alessandro Volta and Luigi Galvari more than a century earlier. Fermi was one of the great theoretical physicists and perhaps the greatest experimental physicist of the twentieth century.

摘要:
In 1926, shortly after the publication of Erwin Schro¨dinger's wave mechanics papers, Enrico Fermi wrote a short article entitled “Arguments Pro and Con the Hypothesis of Light Quanta.” Having carefully studied and mastered Schro¨dinger's papers, Fermi declared in his paper that “at the present time the state of science is such that one can say that we lack a theory that gives a satisfactory account of optical phenomena.” He also listed the experiments that were convincingly explained by light's particlelike character, such as the photoelectric and Compton effects, and those experiments that were readily understood in terms of wave theory, namely, interference and diffraction. The challenge, Fermi stated, was to elucidate the processes involved in the interaction of light with matter at the atomic level and to give intuitive explanations of macroscopic optical phenomena at the microscopic level.

摘要:
My purpose is to celebrate the centenary of Enrico Fermi's birth rather than to make a scholarly contribution to biography. Fermi was born in Rome on 29 September 1901 and died in Chicago on 28 November 1954.

摘要:
Perched on a slope beneath the toweringaiguillesof the French Alps, the Summer School at Les Houches commands a captivating view of the valley of Chamonix. It was a hardworking school, however, particularly in its early years, and enjoyment of the scenery was confined to brief intervals between lectures held in a recently converted barn. In 1954, the two months of lectures featured a course by Enrico Fermi on pion–nucleon interactions, and several other courses by faculty including Le´on van Hove, Freeman Dyson, Robert Marshak, and me.
