摘要:
Does the Pyramid of the Sun harbor any tombs? What might such tombs reveal about the society that two millennia ago built one of Mesoamerica's largest pyramids? In an experiment a` la Luis Alvarez, who in the late 1960s concluded that there are no tombs in Egypt's Chephren pyramid, a collaboration of physicists and archaeologists hopes to glean answers to these questions by monitoring the passage of muons through the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, 50 kilometers northeast of Mexico City.

摘要:
Keen to bolster the economic and science bases in his state, South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds has a new strategy for brokering the conversion of the Homestake gold mine near the Black Hills town of Lead into an underground lab. Not content to wait, however, some proponents of a National Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory are scoping for backup sites. But these latest twists are unlikely to rush NSF—the key to realizing NUSEL. An underground lab is “a stunning opportunity for science,” but the agency “has its procedures,” says Michael Turner, NSF assistant director for mathematical and physical sciences. “Big projects don't happen overnight.”

Across Europe, student strikes over the past few months have disrupted university classes. In Berlin, Germany, they also led to a new world record for the longest‐ever physics lecture.

摘要:
Picture yourself sitting in a fast car, boat, train, or plane and hearing almost no noise. Suppose that you and friends are in your house, apartment, or office and that the living or working space can unobtrusively determine where everyone is. Imagine that the poster or projection screen on your wall can play music and that the pad on your desk can hear you and your visitors. These and similar visions might soon come true with internally charged cellular polymer foams—a novel class of soft electromechanical transducer materials that can be used in sensors and actuators.

摘要:
The strength of the electron‐photon interaction is characterized by the fine‐structure constant&agr;≈1/137.036.Because &agr; is small, quantum electrodynamics (QED), the theory of interacting electrons and photons, can be solved to very good approximation with the traditional technology of pencil and paper. By contrast, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the generally accepted theory of strongly interacting quarks and gluons, has proven to be remarkably resistant to that approach. But in recent years, advances in computer technology and algorithms have brought the ab initio, numerical simulation of QCD to a level of credibility that will have a significant impact on scientific discovery.

摘要:
In this brief memoir, I shall try to describe academician Lev Davidovich Landau; his parents, Lyubov Veniaminovna Harkavi‐Landau and David Lvovich Landau (my grandparents); his sister Sofia Davidovna Landau (my mother); and my association with him and our encounters in various periods of our lives.

摘要:
The Swedish Royal Academy of Science announced on 1 November that it had named a leading Soviet physicist, Lev Davydovich Landau, to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1962. Prof. Landau, a theorist who has made significant contributions in widely separated areas of physics, was cited in particular for having developed “pioneering theories for condensed matter, especially liquid helium.”

摘要:
Landau's name is among the most famous physicists of our time. There are many reasons for this: scientific achievements in different fields of physics, popularity of his books (especially the manyvolume course in theoretical physics produced jointly with Evgeny Lifshitz, which has been translated completely or partially into ten languages), a vivid personality, and an inimitable flair for polemics.
