摘要:
In 1928 I came from Palestine to Easton, Pa., to assist Eugene Cook Bingham at the birth of Rheology. I felt strangely at home. There was Bethlehem quite near, there was a river Jordan and a village called little Egypt. The situation was, however, also slightly confusing. To go from Bethlehem to Egypt, one had to cross the river Jordan, a topological feature which did not conform to the original. Then there were, here, places such as Allen town to which there was no analogy. And this could lead to strange situations, such as when a girl at school was asked where Christ was born and replied, “In Allentown”. When corrected by “No, in Bethlehem,” she remarked, “I knew it was somewhere around here.”

摘要:
A limestone sink‐hole in the mountains of Puerto Rico has been transformed by a team of stateside scientists into a bowl‐shaped bed for a large‐aperture radio telescope with a reflecting spherical dish measuring one thousand feet from rim to rim. The new antenna, designed to be used both as a highly sensitive receiver for studies in radio astronomy and as a powerful radar scanning device for ionospheric research and radar astronomy, was dedicated on November 1. The surface of the dish, covering an area of more than eighteen acres, consists of a reflecting grid of wire mesh lining a natural concave depression in the hills some twelve miles from the northwestern seacoast town of Arecibo. The project represents a four‐year, nine‐million‐dollar cooperative effort by Cornell University, the Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, and the Army Corps of Engineers.

In an order effective November 15, 1963, the Federal Communications Commission has announced that broadcasting stations on the band 608–614 Mc (TV channel 37) will not be authorized anywhere in the United States before January 1, 1974. The order is intended to provide protection from interference by broadcasting stations for radio‐astronomy receivers tuned to this waveband. After ten years the question will be reconsidered and it will then be decided whether to continue protection or to begin licensing stations on channel 37.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Goddard Space Flight Center has awarded a contract to Yale University to design and develop a world‐wide system for monitoring radio emissions from the planet Jupiter. The network will be set up to maintain 24‐hour observation of the planet at the frequencies of 16.5 and 22.2 Mc and will consist of four stations, separated from each other by about a quadrant of longitude. One of the stations will be located near the Goddard Center in Greenbelt, Md. The other three will be located at US satellite‐tracking stations at Hartesbeesthoek, South Africa; Carnavon, Australia; and South Point, Hawaii.

A new high‐intensity radiation development laboratory (HIRDL), equipped to carry out experimental programs with radiation sources in the million‐curie range, was dedicated on November 22 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The $1.85‐million facility was established as a part of the Atomic Energy Commission's Radiation Development Center at Brookhaven, where it is housed in a laboratory building that has been under construction for the past three years.
