摘要:
Hamilton Standard Divisionof United Aircraft Corporation announced in November the formation of a research laboratory which is to be directed by Charles F. Squire, formerly professor of physics at the Rice Institute. The Division is involved primarily in the areas of jet aircraft, missiles and space systems, and aircraft propellers. Scheduled programs will include work in thermodynamics, heat transfer, electron optics, solid‐state physics, physical chemistry, and thermoelectricity. The laboratory, which is now being constructed at Hamilton Standard's main plant at Windsor Locks, Conn., will also support the Division's efforts in electronics, ground support equipment, missiles and space systems, electron beam technology, and advanced product planning.

摘要:
Table Mountainin Colorado has been selected as the site of the new National Center for Atmospheric Research, according to the National Science Foundation and the University Corporation on Atmospheric Research, the group representing fourteen universities which will establish and operate the center under contract with the Foundation. The site, located a short distance from the town of Boulder, was selected as “the best available place from which a large variety of meteorological and atmospheric conditions can be studied”.

摘要:
The National Bureau of Standardshas some new direction‐finding equipment for the study of electromagnetic waves originating in lightning discharges (“sferics”), which was developed at the NBS Boulder Laboratories and has been put into operation near Brighton, Colo. The experimental system, known as “Ephi”, obtains information about the sources of sferics by analyzing the signals and the differences in time of arrival at three 125‐foot antennas, which form an equilateral triangle four miles on a side. The precision of the equipment is such that measurements of time differences can be made with an accuracy of a small fraction of a microsecond.

摘要:
Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studiesadmitted its thirty‐eighth sponsoring institution, Texas Woman's University of Denton, Tex., at its annual council meeting in October. Robert T. Lagemann of Vanderbilt University continues as chairman of the Council, Eric Rodgers of the University of Alabama was elected to the one‐year post of vice chairman, and the following were elected to the Institute's Board of Directors: Paul M. Gross of Duke University. Ronald Bamford of the University of Maryland, H. Stephen Weens of the Emory University Medical School, Jesse W. Beams of the University of Virginia, and Russell S. Poor of the University of Florida. The Board re‐elected Dr. Gross as president of the Institute, Louis A. Pardue of Virginia Polytechnic Institute as vice president, and William G. Pollard (executive director of ORINS) as treasurer. The Institute, a nonprofit educational corporation of southern colleges and universities, was established in 1946, with fourteen sponsoring institutions. The primary concern of ORINS is the operation and administration of educational, research, and teaching programs under direct contract with the US Atomic Energy Commission.

摘要:
The Academic‐Year Institutes Programof the National Science Foundation will be continued in 1961–62 with the participation of 43 colleges and universities. The program was started five years ago with the aim of helping science teachers improve their subject‐matter knowledge through a year's advanced study on a full‐time basis, with emphasis placed on the newer developments in science and mathematics. Approximately 1500 secondary‐school science teachers and 75 teachers from liberal arts colleges, teachers colleges, and junior colleges will attend the institutes next year. College teachers participating in the program will be chosen from among those who are primarily responsible for the training of prospective science and mathematics teachers in their own institutions.

摘要:
The National Research Council of Canadahas announced that its support for research at Canadian universities in 1959–60 reached a record total of $9.37 million, representing an increase of $2.62 million over the previous academic year. Research grants to university staff members amounted to nearly 80 percent, 450 scholarships and fellowships for graduate students accounted for another 14 percent of the total, and the remainder was expended in support of journal publication, contributions to scientific organizations, and administrative costs. Research grants are made only to full‐time staff members of Canadian universities. Scholarships are available both to Canadians and foreign nationals who are studying at Canadian universities. Post‐doctoral fellowships are granted for the support of Canadian scientists studying outside the country and to aid foreigners studying in Canada.
