摘要:
Approximately forty astronomers and physicists met on October 16 and 17, 1962, at the Institute for Space Studies in New York City, to discuss the properties of the planet Jupiter. The Institute is part of the Goddard Space Flight Center, National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The meeting was organized by R. Wildt and H. J. Smith of the Yale University Astronomy Department, and members of the Institute, directed by Robert Jastrow, acted as hosts.

摘要:
On September 25–27, 1962, the Advisory Committee on Thermometry of the International Committee on Weights and Measures met under the presidency of Professor J. de Boer of Amsterdam, in Se`vres (a suburb of Paris), in the Pavilion de Breteuil, the home of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, and for three days discussed important matters relating to international standards of thermometry. The Advisory Committee on Thermometry is one of the working groups of the International Committee on Weights and Measures, a committee established in 1875 by the “Convention du Me`tre”, an international treaty between the principal industrial and scientific nations for obtaining international agreement on physical standards of measurement for science, technology, and industry.

摘要:
A very popular session at the International Precision Electromagnetic Measurements Conference was the Thursday night meeting organized to discuss the proposed atomic definition of the second and methods for measuring the velocity of light. This discussion was moderated and stimulated by Professor Ramsey, who entertained the participants on numerous occasions throughout the two‐hour meeting with remarks such as his invitation to proponents of the pendulum clock to speak up, and with his method of smoothing over a somewhat semantic debate concerning either the proper qualifications to be furnished with a definition of the second or the question as to whether such qualifications are or are not part of the definition. The dialogue and response to Ramsey's balm went more or less as follows:(Ramsey, addressing the debators) “I believe I agree with both of you. Let us suppose that in 1966, or before, that some transition in some material, let us sayxor—”(Unknown participant) “Hydrogen.”(Ramsey) “Cesium.”(Participants) Laughter.(Ramsey) “Well, yes, cesium might well be recommended by the subcommittee. Then, following the recommended definition, there might appear a qualifying remark such as: ‘It is interesting to note that the frequencies of hydrogen and thallium transitions vary up and down together with respect to cesium by parts in1012’.”

摘要:
The objectives of the American Institute of Physics are stated broadly in its charter as “the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics”. Over the years, the actual tasks that are undertaken by the Institute in furthering these objectives shift materially, depending upon their interpretation and the interests and responsibilities of physicists at any given time. The AIP Governing Board and the staff have the obligation at all times to be alert and responsive to the needs of physicists. However, if the Institute is truly to serve physicists, physicists themselves must learn something of the Institute's capabilities and must participate in the establishment of its program of activities. To assist in this task, annual reports are made to the Member Societies and are published inPhysics Today. Some of the activities presented in this year's report are traditional, others have evolved only recently and require critical examination and, if acceptable, support of physicists so that these activities may be nurtured and may survive.

摘要:
The first annual Eastern Theoretical Physics Conference was held at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, on October 26 and 27, 1962. Such a conference was first proposed by M. E. Rose in the spring of 1961, and the decision to organize the first meeting was made at an informal gathering of physicists from Duke University and the University of North Carolina with Dr. Rose. It was thought that this conference should be arranged on a regional basis, somewhat along the lines of the Mid‐Western Theoretical Physics Conference which had been meeting for several years. Under the chairmanship of Dr. Rose, a committee was formed, consisting of E. Merzbacher of the University of North Carolina, J. Sucher of the University of Maryland, and C. N. Yang of the Institute for Advanced Study. In the fall of 1961, a formal proposal was submitted to the National Science Foundation, which agreed to support the first conference.

摘要:
Two more scientific organizations, one a national society and the other a group established on a local basis, have formally become affiliated societies of the American Institute of Physics. At its last meeting, the AIP Governing Board approved the applications for affiliate status submitted by the American Vacuum Society and the Physics Club of Milwaukee. The total number of AIP affiliated societies is now fourteen.

摘要:
This year's slate of officers of the American Crystallographic Association is headed by George A. Jeffrey of the University of Pittsburgh, who is serving as president for 1963. A native of Cardiff, Wales, Dr. Jeffrey received his PhD from the University of Birmingham in 1939. Since 1953, he has been on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh where he is currently professor in the Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Planetary Science Departments and director of the University's Crystallography Laboratory.
