摘要:
September, page 71—The late James E. McDonald wasnota member of the National Academy of Sciences; he was a member of a panel on atmospheric studies that reported to the National Academy. October 1971—In the article “Physics and social change” by George E. Brown Jr, three paragraphs are transposed from their correct order. The last three paragraphs on page 25, beginning “Many physicists have tried…” and ending on page 26 “So says theFortunearticle” should appear on page 23, column 2, between the paragraph ending “…a static knowledge base” and the heading “What can we do about it?”

摘要:
A simple way to generate and study photon echoes, optical nutation, and other coherent optical effects has been developed by Richard G. Brewer and Richard L. Shoemaker (IBM Research Laboratory, San Jose). The work was reported by Brewer at the Esfahan (Iran) Symposium on Fundamental and Applied Laser Physics in September, and appears inPhysical Review Letters(27, 631, 1971).

摘要:
Experiments with high‐energy nitrogen ions have now been done at two accelerators that were formerly devoted only to elementary‐particle physics. At the Princeton Particle Accelerator (PPA) a 3.9‐GeV nitrogen beam was achieved on 15 July, and the Bevatron at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL) produced its 36‐GeV beam on 17 August. Both laboratories can now produce beams of sufficient intensity (at least105particles per sec) to carry out experiments, and the broad range of scientists eager to use the energetic heavy ions includes biologists, nuclear chemists, astrophysicists, solid‐state physicists and high‐energy physicists.

摘要:
If the early universe had a strongly time‐dependent gravitational field, the field would have created pairs of particles, according to Ya. B. Zel'dovich (Institute of Applied Mathematics, USSR Academy of Sciences). This mechanism might explain the existence of particles in the universe, and it offers the hope of understanding why the present ratio of photons to baryons in the universe is108.

摘要:
A beam of high‐energy hyperons has been operated successfully at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The beam was designed and constructed by a team from Yale University, the National Accelerator Laboratory and Brookhaven under the leadership of Jack Sandweiss and William Willis from Yale and Joseph Lach from NAL. The availability of a beam of hyperons is expected to lead to a substantial advance in the study of their properties.

摘要:
Efforts to express the total binding energy of the nucleus in terms of the atomic number, the number of neutrons and the shape of the nucleus form an old and continuing search. An accurate expression for this function would help us understand many nuclear phenomena, for example the fission barrier: Under what conditions and in what ways do nuclei fly apart?

摘要:
Underlying the increased concern for environmental quality is the realization that the earth is vulnerable. This is a quantitative concept: the disturbances that Man is capable of generating on the earth are capable of substantially altering its character. Until recently Man's activity could not affect the viability of the earth in a substantial way in a period as short as a generation. Man's understanding of the earth's processes was also insufficient to detect and interpret the slower effects that hewasresponsible for. As Man's capacity to harm the earth increases, his capacity to monitor and control also increases—fortunately. The task ahead is to refine our understanding of the interaction of Man with his environment, to disseminate a consciousness of this interaction, and to make adjustments in values and behavior where necessary.
