摘要:
The physical sciences, notably physics and astronomy, have come in the past few decades to depend heavily upon the various devices intended to make the solving of mathematical problems less arduous and more rapid than in the days, and with the paper and pencil methods, of the ancients. The methods, of course, have themselves seen little change; yet machines capable of more and more speed in numerical computing make it possible to calculate problems that before would have been solved only approximately if at all.

摘要:
Patent attorneys continually refer to “one skilled in the art.” Somehow, this has an antique flavor. It smacks of wrinkles, recipes, and secret formulae, rather than of the firm basis we imagine must underlie our technological civilization. One would think of art, perhaps, in the case of the physician, who deals with a system as complicated and as little understood as the human body, but scarcely in connection with a matter of applied physics, involving old and well known phenomena of great commercial importance. A particular example should, however, convince the most skeptical that there is sometimes art where one would wish and hope for science. Lest it be too discouraging, the story that follows has, I believe, a happy ending, for it looks as if the physicists and chemists are at last reaching indisputable conclusions concerning the functioning of the oxide‐coated thermionic cathode.

摘要:
In 1936, the manager of a film processing station in Chicago noticed periodic density variations occuring in rolls of 16‐mm film sent in by mail for processing. The possibility that these rolls had been irradiated by unprotected shipments of medical radium or radon in the mails was suspected, and inquiry at the Chicago Post Office proved this to be the case.

Knowledge of skin temperature is important because the heat lost from the body is determined by the rate of temperature change between the deep body tissues and the body surface.

A United Press dispatch from Cincinnati reports that science fiction writers are lamenting the fact their thunder is being stolen by the scientists who are coming up with things fiction writers had never even imagined.

摘要:
Some sixty teachers of college courses in the physical and biological sciences met at Harvard University on the 9th and 10th of July to discuss their aims, methods, and problems in teaching the natural sciences to nonscientists. The five two‐hour sessions were devoted respectively to discussions of the methods of science and whether they can be taught, the history of science, methods of instruction, the relationship of natural sciences to the social sciences, and the problem of obtaining suitable teachers.

摘要:
The Signal Corps Laboratories at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey have developed a process for treating quartz crystals which, according to the announcement, “virtually eliminates the aging characteristics of quartz crystals.” Quartz crystals, used to stabilize frequencies in electronics, begin to drift off when they deteriorate with age, which impairs their usefulness and eventually forces their replacement. Under the new process the crystals are superheated to approximately nine hundred degrees Fahrenheit and then cooled slowly. Three Signal Corps physicists, Arthur C. Prichard, Maurice A. A. Druesne, and David G. McCaa, are credited with developing the new process.

摘要:
Pomona College of California and Wesleyan University in Connecticut have joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a plan for combined liberal arts and technological study which now includes fourteen liberal arts colleges. Under the arrangement, students of high academic standing may pursue a specially planned course for three years in any of the participating liberal arts colleges and then complete the requirements for a science, engineering, or city planning degree in two years at the Institute. Both a B.S. degree from the Institute and a B.A. degree from the liberal arts college are awarded on completion of the program. Other institutions participating in the combined plan include Amherst College of Massachusetts, Bowdoin College of Maine, Miami University of Ohio, Middlebury College of Vermont, Ohio Wesleyan University, Reed College of Oregon, Ripon College of Wisconsin, St. Lawrence University of New York, Washington and Jefferson College of Pennsylvania, College of William and Mary of Virginia, Williams College of Massachusetts, and the College of Wooster, Ohio.
