摘要:
Some physicists are questioning the necessity of quantum electrodynamics in quantum optics and perhaps elsewhere. A lively discussion on possible alternatives developed during the Third Rochester Conference on Coherence and Quantum Optics at the end of June. The most widely discussed alternative was the neoclassical theory of Edwin Jaynes and his collaborators (Washington University in St. Louis). This theory regards the Maxwell equations as describing the radiation field while the Schro¨dinger equation is applied to the atoms. The charge and current sources of the Maxwell field are taken to be given by the corresponding probability densities of wave mechanics. Jaynes contends that these nonlinear equations describe physical phenomena better than has been appreciated in earlier times.

摘要:
A group at the University of Utah believes they have made a hard x‐ray laser. The strikingly simple experiment was reported by John G. Kepros in a post‐deadline paper at the Third Rochester Conference on Coherence and Quantum Optics at the end of June. Subsequently Edward M. Eyring, F. William Cagle Jr and Kepros published a paper in theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences(69, 1744, 1972).

摘要:
In an attempt to understand the mechanism of catalysis a Bell Labs group has found a class of compounds that are good catalysts for the oxidation of carbon monoxide. The Bell group, Rudie Voorhoeve, Joseph Remeika, Paul Freeland and Bernd Matthias (also at the University of California, La Jolla), says that the compounds are Promising substitutes for platinum in devices for catalytically treating automobile exhaust.

摘要:
What appears to be the fourth independent record of the Crab nebula supernova in 1054 was discovered in a cave in northern California, according to Stephen Maran of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The American Indian petroglyph consists of a drawing of a sphere and a crescent; the sphere is thought to represent the supernova and the crescent, the moon. The findings were reported at the Michigan State Meeting of the American Astronomical Society in August.

摘要:
In astronomer detects mysterious pulses in the light from a star at the center of the Crab Nebula, and theorists speculate that the source is a rotating neutron star (a “pulsar”). Massive aluminum cylinders in Illinois and Maryland are suddenly and simultaneously set into vibration, and theorists suggest that a gravitational wave has just passed through the solar system. Radio astronomers discover that space is filled with blackbody radiation at a temperature of about 3 K, and theorists say that it is a by‐product of the initial “big bang” of the Universe. X‐ray astronomers discover aperiodic fluctuations in the x‐ray emission from Cygnus‐X1; optical astronomers discovered that Cygnus‐X1 is associated with a single‐line spectroscopic binary star: from this evidence theorists speculate that the x rays come from a black hole orbit around a normal star.

摘要:
In these days of emphasis on environmental problems, studies of clouds and precipitation take on an added importance. Clouds and precipitation cleanse the atmosphere of natural and manmade pollutants or process them for later removal. Cloud radiative and dynamic properties control a good deal more than half of the solar energy available for keeping the atmosphere moving, and precipitation keeps the continents green (or white). Destructive storms are spawned mostly from cloud systems, but Man can modify his local environment to some extent now through the “seeding” of clouds, and possibly he will eventually be able to control severe storms and remove damaging pollutants.

摘要:
It was in 1930 that Eugene Wigner joined the staff of Princeton on a halftime basis, at the age of 27, sharing a professorship with John von Neumann. Both were members of that remarkably illustrious group of students who had emerged almost as a team in Budapest and then accepted employment in Germany in the last great days of German science. Leo Szilard once confided to me that the group was really not composed of Hungarians but of Martians in disguise.
