THE UNITED STATESappears obsessed with self‐doubt concerning its ability to solve its problems in a manner consistent with its self‐image. This doubt flourishes despite a revolution of far‐reaching social legislation that embodies at every hand the intention to apply the power of scientific research to the solution of our problems; many of the alienated among us tend to identify our troubles with technology. They see science, and perhaps especially physics, as encouraging a mindless, mechanical approach to life that is dehumanizing our society. Yet the record shows that scientists and, I believe, particularly physicists have consistently led efforts to awaken our society to the dangers of the misuse of technology, of the arms race, of the pollution of our environment, of the choking of our transportation and the physical decay of our cities. The social conscience of the physicist is rooted in the personality of American physics. Knowing the limitations of our expertise, but sure of the soundness of our motives, we are concerned to define correctly the character of our profession and its place in the life of our society.

Michael Faraday's contributions to our understanding of electrical and magnetic phenomena are generally well known. Less familiar to many people is the importance of lectures in Faraday's own self‐education and his subsequent teaching of others. He possessed an exceptional capacity for researchandcommunication, a quality still evident in The Royal Institution, of which he had been director. This capacity was evident to all, both young and old, in a manner that was strikingly unique. For in his lectures he expressed all of the emotional and intellectual attributes of the natural philosopher possessed of genius. Lectures, for Faraday, reflected an approach to life involving all aspects of the personality in intimate relation to phenomena.

THE DISCOVERY OF PULSARS, or rapidly pulsating radio sources, was, like certain other historic events in astronomy, an accident. It is reminiscent of the unexpected detection of radio bursts from Jupiter by Bernard F. Burke and Kenneth L. Franklin, who were studying the Crab Nebula, and of the discovery of the cosmic fireball radiation by Arno A. Penzias and R. W. Wilson, who had intended to survey the galactic continuum at high latitudes.

IN RECENT YEARSAlfred Lande´ has tried to give a new foundation for quantum theory, starting with statistical nonquantal principles that have not been taken from classical physics. In his books and articles he attacks the basic concept of quantum theory that is generally taken for granted by most physicists nowadays. He calls this concept “dualistic” and maintains that he can replace it by another more unified one.
