摘要:
“Since I'm an atom as big as bacterias I've got to take microwaves serious. No matter what I do, I'll be cryin'… After they hit me, I'll be an ion.” So begins a poem written last year by Peter Koch of Yale, during the stresses of preparing his PhD thesis. With James Bayfield, Koch had been studying highly excited atoms (often called “atoms in high Rydberg states,” or even simply “Rydberg atoms”); the interesting behavior of such atoms has become the subject of current experimental and theoretical work at many centers around the world.

摘要:
The Energy Research and Development Administration and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have signed an interagency agreement in which ERDA and NASA management will identify specific program tasks that can be undertaken by the NASA centers in support of ERDA programs. ERDA will use the NASA centers in three broad areas:▸ Research in specified fields such as solar systems, gas turbines, fuel cells, hydrogen technology and ground‐propulsion technology;▸ Proposals for specific technology developments, including testing, evaluation and demonstration of projects or hardware;▸ ERDA may call upon NASA for technical and administrative expertise in ERDA's management arrangements with private high‐technology institutions.

摘要:
As the US and the USSR have moved toward a closer relationship over the past twenty years, one very successful area of mutual cooperation has been the field of high‐energy physics. Both the US and USSR have at least five accelerators operating at center‐of‐mass energies greater than 3.0 GeV. During the past two decades the US and USSR have alternately had the higher energy accelerator. The number of active high‐energy physicists, including theorists, machine builders and experimentalists is roughly comparable for both countries. This similarity between the facilities available and the number of specialists in the field for both sides formed a promising foundation on which a joint program could be built.

摘要:
The Soviet fusion program is a broadly based effort with work in progress at several centers on tokamaks, stellarators and open systems, coupled with a strong background in the theory necessary for an understanding of these machines and their limitations. In addition, some exploratory efforts are being carried out on new ideas and new technologies, such as laser‐induced fusion and pulsed systems. In this article we will briefly survey the present status of each component of this extensive yet well balanced program.

摘要:
During the past seven years the National Academy of Sciences of the US and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR have jointly sponsored five symposia on current topics in the theory of condensed matter. These symposia have made possible a significant transfer of scientific information in both directions and have led to the establishment of many useful personal contacts between the scientists of the two countries. In this article we wish to describe briefly the history and organization of the symposia, and discuss in some detail the most recent symposium in the series, which was held in Moscow during the week of 14 October 1974.

摘要:
An impressive amount of research is carried out in the Soviet Union in the areas of laser physics and quantum electronics.PHYSICS TODAYasked a number of leading US physicists who have worked closely with the Soviets in these fields to give us their impressions of this work. They are Michael Feld, an associate professor of physics at MIT; Aram Mooradian, the leader, and Paul Kelley, the associate leader of the Quantum Electronics Group at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory; Keith Boyer, division leader for laser fusion at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, and Ali Javan, a professor of physics at MIT and an inventor of the helium–neon laser.
