摘要:
UNDER a program established jointly by the American Association of Physics Teachers and the American Institute of Physics, the services of visiting scientists are to be made available during the 1957–58 academic year for lectures and consulting activities at the smaller independent liberal arts colleges in the United States in which extensive research programs are not possible. The program, supported by a grant of $35 500 from the National Science Foundation, is intended to promote interest in physics among undergraduates, to aid the teachers in the liberal arts colleges in acquainting their students with the recent advances in the different areas of physics and with the active research now going on, and to explore ways in which professional physicists can assist in the improvement of physics teaching in the high schools. It is proposed that each visiting scientist spend short periods (several days) on the campuses of a number of small colleges. During this time he would give lectures and would consult with the students and with the members of the faculty who are teaching physics.

摘要:
HENRY A. BARTON has announced his decision to resign as director of the American Institute of Physics as of July 1, 1957, after having served in that administrative post for nearly twenty‐six years. He has, however, agreed to continue his association with the Institute on a part‐time basis, devoting his efforts to particular projects in which he is especially interested. His successor as AIP director, appointed by the Governning Board at its meeting of March 16th, will be Elmer Hutchisson, dean of the Graduate School and director of the Research Division of Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, who was instrumental in founding and for eighteen years was editor of the Institute'sJournal of Applied Physics.

摘要:
The American Institute of Physics has several functions as the joint agency of the founder Societies and their members. Of these, publishing requires most of the time of the staff and most of the working space in the AIP office. Closely allied to publishing is service to the Secretaries and Treasurers of most of the Societies in handling the clerical aspects of their responsibilities. Finally the AIP provides a united agency representingallof physics in relations with other professional fields and with national agencies both in and out of the Government. The scope of these activities is defined by the Societies through the Institute's Governing Board. It does not includescientificadvice or services, but rather such other relationships between physics and the surrounding community as can benefit from united effort toward objectives which the Societies hold in common.

摘要:
I left Los Angeles at midnight on Friday the 11th of May. I was the second through passenger by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) over the polar route direct to Moscow. Murray Gell‐Mann, who attended the conference, was the first such passenger and had his picture taken boarding the plane the day before. We first landed at Winnipeg and then flew over Hudson Bay and Baffin Island and landed in western Greenland, at South Stromfjord, just above the Arctic Circle. (From here on, I'll take it directly from my diary.)
